The excellent post by Joe Reeves on how to check timing without actually running your motor at WOT has me interested in checking the timing on my used 40 HP Evinrude. Just curious what it actually is.
Anyway, has anyone, (other than Joe), checked their timing using this method?
Did things work as expected?
Anything to be particularly careful about?
Any tips?
Is that enough questions? :D

Charles

It has been posted and reposted several times. This link should get to you a thread that has the information in it. Fifth post down.
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=023253#000000

Charles
Thanks Charles. When Joe speaks everyone listens because he is good! I need to do this as well, but I think with no testing wheel, I will take it out on the lake when it is glass and have my other half steer while I test the BTDC 19 degrees +/-0 at 5000 RPM's........L

Note: That timing procedure is ideal for the Evinrude and Johnson engines that DO NOT incorporate the "Faststart" feature.

If you have a engine with the Faststart feature, that feature would need to be disabled first.

I was a little hesitant at first, but it was actually pretty easy. Safe? Probably not. Really dangerous? Didn't seem to be on my 18 to 20 mph pontoon boat. :D
For anyone that doesn't already know this, a small stripe of white paint on the degree mark you want to locate makes things a lot easier.

Charles

Re: Joe Reeves Timing Tip

We have always used the method Joe describes to set the timing initialy. We do check it under a load -- always!

However, hanging off the back of any boat while underway is not the way we check it. If we are not using a dyno we leave the boat on the trailer and back down the ramp far enough to run the motor under a load.

Can you imagine hanging off the back of a race boat running triple digits? I cant!!

BTW -- good tip on the white paint Charles. We use White Out.

Well, I've done that once when conditions were glass and it wasn't that dangerous. Trust your driver!

What I don't understand Dhadley, how you can put your boat into water still attached to the trailer, put it in gear and reach over 5000 RPM's to time the WOT without pushing your boat, trailer and truck up the ramp? Please inform me differently....am I missing something here? Remember no access to a testing wheel..........L

Oh that. Yeah, be sure and put it in park. :D

Be sure the bow of the boat is all the way forward, to the stop, and then just throttle up slowly. You'll be surprised how easy it is.

c/6
Hooty
