Sea Horse Pressurized Gas Tank

How does the priming bulb work on a pressurizing tank. Does it just pressurize the hose , or does it also pressurize the tank. What maintains the pressure in the hose, a check valve ? I can pump up the hose to full pressure and then remove the cap and the hose maintains its pressure, is this right ? What allows the pressure form the tank to push the fuel into the line ? When I run my old Seahorse 5.5 wide open it slowly loses speed after about 30 secs, I can't find any leaks that I know of in the tank, fuel lines are ok, just took it apart in case it was overheating and seizing up, bad water pump , but the pump was fine ( new 2 yrs ago)
Just about running out of ideas.
Thanks
John D

On my old 7.5 there is no priming bulb. There is a thumb pump on the tank itself which, when pumped, creates pressure in the tank along with the fuel half of the double hose. When the tank is opened, the pressure is relieved and no fuel is supplied to the motor until the tank is closed and the thumb pump is again pumped. The other half of the dual hose continues to supply pressure to the tank as fuel is used.

This engine will not run using a single-line tank.

I have the dual line and thumb pump on the tank also. When you pump the thumb pump does it pressurize the tank. Mine does not , just the hose, so perhaps the problem is with my thumb pump?

Sorry I forgot to mention that this is without the hoses hooked up to the motor, I was just checking for leaks on the tank and cap.

Hi CJ46
The primer pump does not presureize the tank. It just pumps fuel from the tank and fills the bowl on the carb. The tank is presurized after the motor is started. If your tank seems to be holding presure, Check the o-rings in the connector, they my need replaced. this is probably the weekest link in the system, next to the connector would be the tank cap (gas cap) seal. Hook up tank, run motor and spray soapy water over tank and fittings, test for leaks. Water pumps should be inspected annualy. this is a regular service item.

Sounds as if someone jury-rigged a primer bulb into the hose to try and get by,your tank needs rebuilding, with new diaphgram and gaskets at least.Parts are available but can be pricey.Meticulous care should be used with a good exploded view to rebuild a pressure tank.I would have it converted to fuel pump/single line hose.

I just learned something. I thought when you pumped the thumb pump, it also pressurized the tank. I stand corrected. I had a '57 for 15 years and never new that. Now I just feel good that I'm not too old to learn. ...if I could just remember to zip my pants....

Re: Sea Horse Pressurized Gas Tank

Thanks for your replies. I guess I should have used thumb pump instead of priming bulb on my original post, it seems to have caused a little confusion. I have the correct 2 line setup with the thumb pump on the tank, been using it for 2 yrs now and the motor just started acting up. I'll check the tank next time I have the boat out. Thanks again.
