I bought a "new" 18hp evinrude. Started but ran rough or wouldn't stay running. I rebuilt the carb, starts right up, idles fine now, but put it in gear and it seems doggy, won't come up to high RPM in the barrel. Real smokey too, i am running it at 24:1 like you guys told me. Also how hot should the motor, heads get, seems to run hot, pumps plenty of water out the exhaust though. Any help getting this baby running tip top would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

Steve
Welcome to the board.
it may well run warm in the barrel, not enuf (enough) water to get ride of the heat. And it may also "choke" on its own exaust. It will seam like a lot of smoke as well, put it on the lake/river and see what it runs like there.

Very hazardous to rev it up with no load, Steve.

You may be lucky it bogged. Could be as simple as running too rich (four cycling) or it could be running on one cylinder. Check for hot, blue spark to both.

Good luck. :)

I took it out on the lake, it starts and runs fine, but has no RPM at full throttle. For an 18 hp it's slow. I adjusted the carb as directed in a previouse post. It idles great, purrs like a kitten, starts with half a pull, but wont getty up and go? I checked both plugs, they look the same color and spark.

pull one plug at a time with it at idle, if it dies on one and not the other swap the plugs and try again. Ruber gloves are handy here. could be the high speed is giving to much fuel as JB said. How does it run to about 3/4 throtle? Many engines do not start openiing the carb untill 3/4 throtle.

hi ihave a few things you can try
1-50:1 gas oil mixture,2-try b7s ngk plugs 3- try adjusting your high speed jet screw towards the lean side-jim

if you haven't done so already adjust the high speed needle valve. You'll be surprised on how far in you may need to go to get the motor revving as it ought to. if you've done that, have you done a link and sync? The carb may not be opening up as much as it can.

ok doing this its very crucial that u have some kind of protection i dont recomend doing it though. get a spark plug tester. it should open the carb right when the roller hits the line on the cam.

run 24:1 !!!!! not not not 50:1:eek::eek::eek:

Re: Help with 1963 Evinrude 18hp

I was thinking 50:1 is the correct mixture for a '63 model, but I could be wrong. I think you've received excellent advice on the spark check, but I'm thinking there is no high speed adjustment on a '63, if I remember right. I believe it has a fixed high speed jet???? If it is a fixed jet, you might try soaking the carb and blowing it out with compressed air.
If you can't hold your finger on the head for three seconds without an "yeeeeouuuuchh" then it's too hot--- if it is too hot, check thermostat since it appears to be pumping water good.

Good luck,
JBJ

Check spark first, then when it's not running make sure the carb opens up fully when at WOT and also what'r the compression numbers?
