78 Evinrude 55hp prop shaft removal

Just hit rock and broke lower case. As best i can tell all the internal parts are OK . Have started dissasembly, have the lower case removed ,prop seal is removed, shift linkage is out, need instructions on removing prop shaft and drive shaft/pinion gear assembly.<br /><br />Thanks<br /> John

you need a friend that works in a transmission shop,or a really big pair of snap ring pliers to get the clips out, two of em in there just went through a reseal last summer on 1976 70 hp evinrude, tried but didnt work.good luck.

thinkinboutsinkinit<br />Great name ! Hey I am helping JRW where are the clips you are talking about located on the prop shaft and any info on how the drive shaft comes out . He is working on getting a manual for this motor but doesn"t have one yet.<br /><br />CER 79

We have removed spring clips prop shaft still wont come out any more suggestions<br /> thx

I believe you have to disengage the shift shaft from the prop shaft at the same time. That requires removing the boot and then pulling on the shift rod and the prop shaft simultaneously.

ezeke <br />Got the shaft out by removing the nut on the pinion gear and it came right out thanks for your help . Anyone know where to buy a lower case for a 78 55hp jhonnyrude at a fair price <br /><br />JRW44
