Does any one know how to convert over a 57 5.5 hp Johnson fuel tank & motor from a two-line to a one-line? I heard that it can be done. Is that so?

GE

Hi GE,
Can it be done? Yes. Is it worth it? IMHO, no. The pressure system is at least as reliable as the fuel pump system, tank rebuild kits are readily available through several sources, and the tanks themselves are fairly easy to find on eBay, yard sales, www.aomci.org, etc.
There is no easy way to convert the 5.5 without some drilling, tapping, fabrication, etc.
I would fix what you have and use it. I've got several pressure tank motors and have had very few problems related to the tanks.
- Scott

I agree with Chinwalker. If you had the necessary parts laying about the shop already, and for some reason just couldn't come up with a presure tank then maybe. And on the 5.5hp it would still be a pain. Once you over haul, know and understand the system you should have very few problems. I see Napa auto parts can order the hose from their marine parts catolog. I buy it by the roll. Of course this is more than I need for my own use, I never have any trouble getting rid of the excess.

I'm running a 54 7.5 'rude every weekend. Probably sees about 2 hours of runtime every weekend.

Still runs great. I replaced the double line hose with standard 1/4" auto fuel line. Bought 25' and cut it in half to make the double fuel line.

My old line must of sucked air. Motor ran much better and I can now actually troll.

I'm planning on re-building the tank....

Anybody got the rebuild kit for sale.....

hello
its simple to tap into the intake tranfer port for a pulse fitting to drive a pump. also a lot of the 6 hp motors that had pumps can donate a transfer port cover. I dont like the pressure tanks cause I really dont like having a bomb in my boat. the air/fuel mix used to pressurize the tank is a chemically correct mix of fuel/oxygen. its just a tad unerving for me but it works well when it works.
good luck and keep posting

Rodbolt,
The 5.5/6hp motors don't have transport covers - they're cast in. I've never seen a pressure tank explode - calling it a "bomb" is a bit extreme. The system is reliable and has worked well for over 50 years. As with anything mechanical, some simple maintenance will keep it working well for another 50 years...

Steammill,
You can get rebuild kits from www.vintageoutboard.com. I also see them for sale on eBay from time to time, includes all gaskets, o-rings and hose for around $20.00...

- Scott

Thanks, it sounds like I'll rebuild. Don't know if its true, but I've been told the fuel tank working, is worth more than the motor! I'll just be glad when all the issues are over and the pole is hauling in fish. It's amazing how involved & expensive it gets with a "cheap" yard yale item!

KOKO (Keeping on keeping on)

Hey guys
Ive got a 1958 johnson 10hp model qd-19. Are there any newer low profile tanks i could substitute/rig up to replace the old pressure tank? Or is it any easier to rig a pump for this motor compared to the 5.5?

I have a 58 model 10hp evenrude and I installed a small electric pump and
I'am using a regular tank. Its working Great! I just plugged the vacume
port on the block and ran a seperate hose to the carb. You just have to switch the pump off when your not running the motor...
