225 Ocean Runner voltage problem

My 1998, 225 Johnson's voltage has climbed to 18V on occasion. After shutting down and restarting it will return to 13V but unexpectedly jump back to 18V. Can the regulator be overheating, causing this or are they a good or bad component ?
If I need to change the regulator is there a difference between brands ? I see CDI are cheaper than OEM or Sierra. Are there any quality differences?
Also , Where can I learn to "vent" this new regulator. I understand failure is usually caused by overheating.
Any help is appriciated.
Jim

Re: 225 Ocean Runner voltage problem

Welcome to the forum
First, next time this occurs, throw a volt meter on the battery (ies) to confirm voltage. That will rule out the gage being the problem. Next, idle the motor and use a hairdrier on the reg/rect and the powerpack to see if you can simulate the problem. Next, use your manual to check the reg/rect and powerpack electrically. By this time you should be able to spot the problem.
Good Luck
PS- I should have mentioned checking all of the battery cables for corrosion and tightness, as well as the grounds on the block. Sometimes when batteries charge up the plates inside can warp and short out a cell, so be certain your batteries are in good condition also.

Re: 225 Ocean Runner voltage problem

While on the water, during shut down, I switched batteries and experianced the same problem, 18V. The batteries do have thumb nuts but they are clean and tight. I will change them before the next trip and take along a multimeter.
Any comment on the differences in brand names or the process of venting the regulator ?
Thanks

Re: 225 Ocean Runner voltage problem

Only opinion is second hand from what I've read. I know alot of people who use CDI components without complaint. Either Dhadley or Joe Reeves wrote a procedure for venting and have had success eliminating overheating reg's. I'll search and attach the link if I find it.
Does your problem come and go while in use, or does it read 18V continuous after it occurs?
