I have an 85HP 69 johnson 85ESL69, I have converted the amplifier/coil over to a standard automotive coil. Since doing so it has ran pretty well. The first time out however the voltage gauge stayed pegged all the way over to 16v. After that trip I cleaned battery connections and ignition connections, after that I was out several other times and the volts read right at 12v. Last Sunday it ran at 11v all day regardless of RPM's and by the end of the day the battery was dead. I do have a new battery and was not running any other accessories. I have tested the rectifier since and have current in both directions, so it's gone bad. the question is what/where do I buy? I have not found a listing on any web sites for my model closest is 85hp from 1970/80. The rectifier that was in it is a Varo R109 8145. I have not found any Varo, some listings For Sierra for different years. My other question is why did it go bad? The modifications I made? or possibly the dirty battery cables?

Re: Bad Rectifier

I'd like to hear more about that conversion. Old amplified ignition systems have Maker points that fire the plug when the points close. Standard automotive ignition systems have Breaker points that fire the plug when they open. Timing should be a real problem, but obviously you got around that somehow. How???

You'll fry a voltage regulator with corroded or loose battery terminals, or by connecting the battery backwards.

WillyB, I don't know about maker points, maybe my ignorance just paid off. I don't think I have maker points though. I talked to a Johnson mechanic here in town today and before I even mentioned what I did he told me not to by an amp if it goes out and that he would change it over to an automotive coil ignition.

Is there a chance you could get him on here? He could make a freaking fortune with a conversion kit. Those dang amps cost over $300. People are always asking if it can be done and I've been told it ain't possible. Obviously we've been misled, or this guy's a freaking genius.

He seamed pretty savy on boats and motors, I don't think he knows what the internet is though.

WillyB, did you get the pictures I sent them about 15min ago. by the way according to the guy I talked to you don't want a resistor. Some coils have them built in. He said that they will rob power.

gary i have a question for you, i have the same engine and those rectifier you talk i have the book for this engine but for the wiring diagram the blue wire and the gray from the rectier they are not in the same place they right in the black plastic cover aneway the engine run but i dont have baterry charge so i dont know if the book say is right or the black cover ??

Re: Bad Rectifier

Slyfloyd, I don't know which is right I can tell you that on my rectifier attachment the yellow wire attachs to number 2 on the lug a yellow w/black stripe attached to number 4 on the lug and a red w/yellow stripe attached to number 5 on the lug. This from counting left to right

Re: Bad Rectifier

Anyhow back to my original question, does anybody know what rectifier I need to buy for this motor. 85 hp 1969 Johnson. The existing one has a number stamped on top in the caseing, 510 694. In the center it says Varo R109 and below that it there's number 8145. This is a 3 wire rectifier, 1 yellow, 1 yellow w/ gray stripe, 1 red w/ yellow stripe. I'm guessing that all 3 wire rectifiers are the same, but I don't want to make that guess and burn a new one out or my stator. All of the listings I've found so far have skipped over 1969.

hi gary
did you change your stator assembly when you carried out the conversion?

Re: Bad Rectifier

Stairlift, no I just changed out the original amp. and coil. I opened the points some, I'm going to try setting them back .010 and opening the spark plug gap .040, see if I can peak the performance a little.

Re: Bad Rectifier

hmmm cant understand why that would affect the charging circuit unless the battery got connected round the wrong way thats the only way i can see how to blow a rectifier. you can get a new one here: http://www.maxrules.com/fixomcindex.html. normal running voltage should be about 13.5V. To read over 16V implies that u have a high output stator in which case a regulator (a faulty one!) in the charging circuit. not sure on this tho perhaps someone else here has more detailed knowledge of your motor. good luck
