I'm lookin for a little help here. I replaced the powerhead on my 1985 120hp OMC SeaDrive which is comparable and uses the parts from Johnson and Evinrude. My powerhead did not have a "bubble" on the back but the remanned one does. Now there is this overheating problem that for weeks(4 or 5 now) cannot be solved by our mechanics since we had the powerhead changed. It will idle for a few minutes and then the alarm will go off (constant beep noise). This led us to replace the water pump and housing, impeller, and the thermostats and it still overheats. Supposedly the cooling passages are not clogged. Can anyone offer me any insight on what may be wrong because im going nuts here not being able to use my boat all summer now. Is there a diffrence between the motor I had and the "bubbleback". Someone said something to me about the gasket between the powerhead and the lower unit if it means anything.

1)we went off the word of one mechanic who said compression was low.
2)the thermostats, valves and springs in the exhaust housing adapter were changed.

Do you have a 1.6 liter or do you have the cousin of the 120 outboard?

Since yours did not have a bubble we're assuming its not the 120 style motor. So therefore it must be the 1.6 crossflow.

First verify that it indeed is overheating. If it is take a peek at the deflectors. Make sure they are in properly. If they are, remove the covers on the heads.

Let us know!

I believe i have the 1.6L motor and it is overheating because the water coming out of the telltale is hotter than that of the other motor on the boat. If it helps the model number is 2BAXCR and it's an 84 motor. This may sound dumb but how do I check the deflectors?
