Drooling fuel when tipped up

This is an 82 175 Johnson V6 w/o oil injection. It is equipped with a jet lower unit. Because of this, the motor does not extend below the bottom of the boat and therefore is rarely tilted up. For example, I launch and trailer it in the upright position since there's no danger of it being damaged. Can't remember the last time I tilted it up.<br /><br />Yesterday I was messing around with it and tilted it completely up. When I tilted it back down, I noticed a little fuel dribbling out of the cowling and down the leg. Not a lot, but then again, it wasn't tilted up very long. I didn't notice the fuel dribbling when it was tilted up, only when it returned to the upright position after being tilted.<br /><br />Any ideas what's going on and where I should look?<br /><br />Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the fuel came out of the float bowls when you tilted it up and stayed in the air box...when you tilted it back down it found a way out of the cowl....I don't think you should be worried if you clean the spill up

Thanks guys - It does look like that's what's happening. It is really very little fuel - a few ounces at most. Another local friend told me he thought it was pretty much normal for this sort of rig as well. I'll keep my eyes on it - but like I said, I rarely if everr tilt it up. Thanks again.

Totaly normal. Gravity took over. When you launch, tilt your motor down before you pump up the bulb so fuel is in your float chambers before you try to start your motor. Less cranking, easier starting.PDS

I had the same problem on an '87 90 horse with prop drive. Everytime I'd tip it up, gas would run down the leg. Got everything dirty. Figured it was just the gas in the bowls running out into the air box but couldn't understand why the gas didn't have some place to go besides into the pan and down the leg. Pulled the silencers, airbox and bottom carb and found a broken drain hose that is supposed to run from the bottom of the airbox back to the motor. When the gas would run into the airbox and down to the drain, it just continued to run out the pan because the hose wasn't attached to catch it and dispose of it properly. Replaced the hose and cleaned everything really well with Simple Green and she's been for the most part dry ever since. <br /><br />Mark<br />Minneapolis, MN

Thanks Mark - I'll check that out next time I take off the silencer (probably fall fogging). On my motor it's kind of a pain to get it off and on because some of the screws are tough to get to. Although after a couple of times, I've sort of got it figured out.

Fuel drip. Had fuel draining and it appears to be coming from rubber gasket in fuel pump. Fuel pump screws are as tight as they get. Does the large center screw control amount of fuel?<br /><br />I have a gasket kit; is there any problem replacing gaskets I should know about?<br /><br />linusz
