1988 14hp.... hello, im trying to figure out my rough idle.

ive rebuilt the carb twice, once yesterday, new fuel pump, decarbed it(help a lil), new plugs, new fuel lines and fresh gas....id like to get boysen power reeds soon...lync and sync seems right on

i took off the flywheel to look under there , see if anything was bad or cracked and i found the timerbase to be rubbing the flywheel along the edge in the pic...the flywheel has rubbed off the rubber and is rubbing in the metal inside it

Q1. what does the timer base do
Q2. what effect would it have by the flywheel rubbing it

Hi Mikey......The timer base tells the power pack when to fire. If the flywheel is rubbing the metal strip, no voltage can be induced in the timer base coil to tell the power pack to fire. You can set the air gap by lining the edge of the timer base up with the machined edges on the posts the timer base sets on. If it's tore up pretty bad, might wanna replace it.

Jim

thanks jim .

i took ot off and cleaned it up a bit and when i re-installed it, i pushed it in towards the middle all i could to get it away from the flywheel's edge.

what a difference. my motor used to shimmy and shake like there is no tomorow(sp)

now it actually starts on fisrt 2 pulls instead of forst 15 pulls. idles much better.

i guess it was shorting out every time the flywheel touched it and it wasnt getting all the voltage it needed to the plugs. thanks a million
