Original symptoms.....

Got throttle with throttle plate open but no idle.

Compression little on the low side at 60/55 psi but runs strong.

Points and condensers replaced...coils good...good spark.

Put new spark plugs in (J4C at .030+)

Threw in tank and hooked up my shop tank. Started Ok. Let it rev till warm and when I came back off throttle plates it coughed and quit. Ran needle in and backed out 3/4 turn. Same results. Adjusted needed more in and out with same results.

Checked all the fuel lines. Cut the ends and reseated with new ties straps. Cleaned out fuel pump filter and put new filter screen in. Checked pump by blowing into the inlet and then sucking out. Pump seems OK. Later put a psi gauge on the outlet and it pumped 3psi.

Still no change in engine. Pulled carb and disassembled. Soaked in carb cleaner and followed up with spray carb cleaner into all ports and followed that up with compressed air. The only place I couldn't get to was behind the filler plug over the calibrated port. Plug would not come out and I didn't want to force it. So I did the best I could to clean it out. Checked the reeds with carb off and could see no apparent physcial damage and all were shut.

Tried the engine again. Same thing but just a tad (not much) better. Can't see anyplace on the engine that would be sucking air. Seal on top appears tight. Even rechecked the point gap.

Idle it down to where the throttle plate is getting closed and it starts coughing and eventually quits. Pumping the primer bulb has no effect.

Please....someone help save a wrench's sanity. I won't let this thing beat me.

Jim

Dang, Jim! :( You already tried stuff I would suggest.

Since it dies, that suggests that whatever the culprit is is common to both cylinders and is related to getting fuel/air when the throttle plate closes.

Have you tried going at the idle orifice in the carb throat just behind the butterfly? A fine wire bent into an "L", coming in from the reeds end of the throat can get into it. There might be something there that the cleaner and air didn't clear.

Good luck, and let us know if that works. :)

This is probably obvious to you, but I'll ask anyway...when you spray carb cleaner in the idle line, do you see it come out the idle holes in the venturi?

OBJ,I use a 1/8 drill thru the center of that core plug that gave you trouble.Just don't go deep with the drill. Then pry it out.

As for compression,my gauges differ about 10 points.my cut out on the lowest one is 70 PSI.Below that,We usually end up owning the motor for the price of the repair bill. They just won't run right,or be dependable.

Just my 2cents
Doug

Yes to ledgefinder. At least I "think" I saw it. Didn't really check to see how many idle ports there are.....Dumb me.

It's not the core plug that stop me Doug. There is a filler plug behind the core plug that is stuck. It's made of plastic and I didn't want to pry on it to hard for fear of breaking it.

I can understand about the compression also. If the carb dosen't present anything, I'm going to pull the head and take a look. Maybe got a blowed head gasket or even exhaust cover gasket blowing in to the cylinder.

Dang I hate it when I can't put a handle on it!!!

Really appreciate all the "git backs" from you guys.

We got it!!!! JB hit the nail directly on the head. The idle ports in the carb throat were plugged. Shot near a whole can of carb cleaner through them until they squirted out. Little beauty runs like a charm.

Big thanks for all that helped and a very large thanks to JB. Man I like bein' a wrench again!!! :D :D

Soakin' out helped a little....was able to get both cylinders up to 70psi warm. Customer decided he was happy with the engine and the way it run so he took it. It did really run and idle good.

Re: 67' 9.5....makin' me nuts

It raised the compression on mine by 10 psi in both cyls. I used deep creep from napa. Give it a good run on the lake and do a compression reading again. I bet it comes up.

Being a wrench myself, I was at my wits end several weeks ago tracking down a plug fouling issue on the bottom plug only. After I threw a bunch of parts at it, I found the thermostat stuck open causing all my issues, I felt like an idiot.

Good luck

These come my way every so often.

Usually when I fix a real tuff drivability issue and I start thinking I'm a "super tech", my head get's a little big and a tough one put's me back in my place.

Or worse yet it ends up being something very simple and I try to over analize it and miss the basic stuff.

40 and still learning.

Randy
