Needs choke to run...

I have a 9.5 horse Johnson seahorse about 25 years old. The only way it keeps running is with the choke on... or at low throttle. As soon as I open the butterflies it dies, this is after half hour of running it. I pulled the fuel line from the carb and it spits gas. Am I right in thinking it's running too lean/not getting enough gas? I've never opened a carb up before... any advice would be appreated.

Your thinking is correct. Too lean. Get yoself a manual (lower lefthand corner of this page), follow the instructions and do a rebuild on the carb.

c/6
Hooty

Carb will be a piece of cake on that motor with a Manual at your side...
