Hi I am posting in regards to a friends boat. Let me start off by saying I am mechanically inclined but have never worked on or around boats.

He picked up this boat that sat for a few years after a divorce. I have not seen it yet but will try to explain what I know so far. The engine will rev when not under load in N but when in the water it will autumatically bog down when put in gear and placed anywhere above idle. also a wire that connected the 2 carbs together was missing. They rigged a piece of wire to make them run together again. Is this correct or are they supposed to open at seperate times? I was also wondering what maintenance should be done before really pushing on it such as changing the gear box oil, etc, etc....

I would appreciate any quick tips to try out,

Erik

Erik,

First off, the engine needs some things done.

1. The carbs are probably in need of a thorough cleaning and new kits installed. It's relatively easy on that engine.

2. That link is very important. You need the correct one. these guys will have it.m Once replaced, the synch and link procedure must be done.

www.twincityouboard.com

Tell them your serial number and model number. That is located on the bracket that bolts to the transom.

3. The water pump will need to be serviced.

All of these items are easy, with a $30.00 manual. Available below, or at most dealers.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will definitely check those out. Approx how much is the kit for the carbs. It seems you need to call a lot of these places to get estimates.

Thanks again,

Erik

Probably $25.00, or less, for each.

BTW, check the compression. No sense sinking $$$ into an engine with major issues.

Is checking the compression the same deal as checking it on cars? The fella that owned it was very peticular of the care before it sat. It seems boats can't handle sitting for very long before they start hurting.

Thanks,

Erik

Yes,

Just disable the ignition by pulling the kill switch lanyard and open the throttle when you crank it over.

The compression should be over 100 psi and within 5 psi of each other.

Great. Thanks! Hopefully I can check it out this weekend. I will see if he has the service manual. If not we will have to pick one up. One more bit I forgot to mention. One of the spark plug wires disconnected from the boot and just pushed back in place. I'm assuming it is arching. I told him he needs to replace it ASAP.
