5 hp johnson locking up

I have a 1968 5hp johnson outboard. It runs good, however on occasion after starting and running quick for about a couple of minutes it loads up and dies. when I go to start it it is like it is locked up and doesn't want to pull. After a minute or so it pulls comes back to life and runs great. However once it cools back down and is ran quick it wants to do the same thing.

1968 5 hp johnson outboard
model #LD-13E

Do ya suppose it's overheating? Next time it does it, feel the cylinder head with your finger tips and see how hot it is. You should be able to hold your fingers on it for several seconds. How long since the water pump was rebuilt?

c/6
Hooty

i have the same motor and had a similar problem. Dont touch the head, if its overheating you'll burn the crap out of your finger (speaking from experience) Check you thermostat to see if its stuck, if it isint then it sounds like like what hooty said, its time for a water pump rebuild

Re: 5 hp johnson locking up

My father put an new water pump in it last year. After it was in he ran it to make sure it ran and then it sat for a whole year since I have been running it it hasn't even ran through a six gallon tank. About maybe six hour of total run time.

Re: 5 hp johnson locking up

Yesterday I took it out and it ran alright then I ran it fast and I think it is overheating. I immedaitely took off the hood and there was some smoke that came out of the carb and it was really hot. I got it started it took and two minutes and it ran good on faster throttle for about an hour. Then did it again. I think it may be time to change the thermostat. It is pumping water. Is there a way to check if the thermostat is sticking?

Re: 5 hp johnson locking up

I had put the engine away and am working on it again.

I check and there is not a thermosat in the housing.

I took it down and clean and relubed all of the lower unit and check the water pump. It is pumpin water and the water pump is still in great shape.

I book I have in he cover talks about a 50:1 mixture. This is what I have it mixed. It seems that when it loads up and dies the motor dies with enough force to spin it about 100 degrees that is if it is running full throttle. If not it still spins a little on lower throttle.

Thanks
Joe

50-1 is the correct oil mix. If you are sure that your impeller is ok and you have not thermostat then there must be something obstructing water flow to the heads.

Re: 5 hp johnson locking up

You may be having problems with blocked water passages. You may want to pull the cylinder head off and see if you have any water in the water jackets around the cylinders. I had this same problem with my 3 HP Lightwin which was completely blocked. With some determination, I was able to follow the path of the water flow as it went up and through the powerhead. I have this described at
http://www.outboard-boat-motor-repa... Johnson 3 HP 1952-1967 Water Circulation.htm

Some of those water passages are quite small because OMC actually did not want the motor to run too cool and there was no thermastat to regulate cooling. Mine looked like it was packed with calcium or something that I had to dig out. I am sure a lot of motors wind up in a dumpster in this condition but the problem can be fixed if you are determined enough.

Re: 5 hp johnson locking up

I am wondering if I don't have a condenser problem. I have cleaned out all the water ports and then moter run quite a bit cooler however I still have the same problem. It is not locking up but I will run good for a few minute then just die. Then next pull it starts right up runs a few minutes and dies.

I have cleaned the carb, and check the fuel pump. Any other suggestions.

Thanks
Joe

Joe - Get some temperature sticks and verify that your motor is not overheating.

The condenser has nothing to do with locking up. It would be wise to replace the points and condenser as part of routine maintenance.

Re: 5 hp johnson locking up

I ran it tonight on low RPM for a half hour and I still could touch the heads there warm but not enough to burn me.

However as soon As I kick it up to high rpms it runs about two minutes and stop. Then next pull it fires back up and runs for about 1-2 mins and dies.

I going to check the ignition stuff next.

Thanks
Joe

Make sure that you don't have a fuel filter someplace that needs cleaned or replaced.

You said you cleaned the carb. Did you soak it overnight in carb cleaner, blow out all the passages with compressed air and put it back together with new carb kit parts?

You may want to go ahead and tune up the ignition with new parts, especially if the parts in there are original from 1968. Check your timing. You can use the method I describe at http://www.outboard-boat-motor-repa... 5.5 HP 1954-1964 Ignition System Tune-up.htm

Make sure your stator base is turning as you turn your throttle. This advances the timing and will cause your motor to run poorly or die when at full throttle if the linkage is somehow disconnected. There is a little wheel that likes to pop off or go missing.

There is not much else to that motor. You just have to go through and make sure everything is right and it will run.
