Johnson 1984 V4 140 hp quits at slow or idle

Engine won't idle or run at slow speeds under 1200rpm without dying after warmed up. Runs fine at higher speeds. Recent complete overhaul in shop. Carbs rebuilt with new floats. Floats have been adjusted.

I still dont think they made a V6 140.

Yes - in the water in gear, or in neutral, in the bay or in the ocean.

We set it back down - the rpm's - it might have been 1100. Mechanic going out in it in am in the bay. He is thinking about it. We will probably spend 1 1/2 hrs out there while it goes thru it's die routine at "slow speed" and in neutral. Hopefully he finds the problem.

I have an '83 140 that is having a similar problem. My wrench is looking at the recirc system for blockages. Don't know if yours has the same problem, but it couldn't hurt to look.

Looks like the wrench went thru an elimination process. Spent 1 1/2 hrs in the water working on the fuel system. Found the carburation problem, and we have spent 2 1/2 hrs idling and it has stopped only once. We consider it fixed. Do have to reve it up in neutral about every 20-30 minutes to clean out the whatevers. This motor has always been cold blooded taking 7-10 min before it would run in reverse to leave the dock; now within 2-3 minutes we are able to depart and enjoy the boat. Our wrench is in Coos Bay, Oregon and he is good.

What Plugs are you running, and at what Gap???

One item that "may" help your idle situation, would be to install a set of QL82C's, and gap at .035-.040. If you have fairly new plugs (this years) and they are in good condition, try opening the gap to .040-this "may" help.

Thanks - will check out the gap on current plugs as they were new in May this year.
