I have a '73 Evinrude 70hp...It has 110 (+/- .5 using a digital guage) on all three cylinders...The timing and everything is exactly as the Manual says that it should be.

I can run it on Muffs...OR with the Lower Unit sumbmerged in a Drum, and it runs, shifts and takes the throttle fine.

BUT, when I get it down to the ramp, it's like it suddenly developes an 'allergy' to water...

As soon as I try to put it in gear, it dies.

I've been through the manual, and checked and double checked everything.

I finally broke down and took it to a 'Dealer', to have him throw a Tune-up on it, and maybe he could find the problem.

He came back and said that even though the compression is right on, I probably have a dead cylinder???????????????????

He did a 'bleed-down' and says that it shows the cylinders are solid...So he is also stumped.

It's been a good motor and well taken care of, but I don't know if it is worth throwing any significant monies at.

ANY SUGGESTIONS????????????

Are you submerging the engine to deep into the water while at the launch ramp, such as water over the exhaust relief holes. Your engine also has a tuned exhaust, if submerged to deep, it can pull water back into the cylinders. Launch the engine into the water just up to the water pump, or take the boat completly off the trailer, and see how it starts.

Sounds like it's is lean..have you cleaned the carbs and sync'd them.
You may have a weak fuel pump too.
Idling with muffs eats very little fuel.

I did try it off the trailer...same thing...she just dies as I try to put it in forward/reverse.

I tried again since my original post...same thing.

You're not running on all three. Use an inductive timing light alternately on each plug to see which one is dropping out.

LOL I thought those motors were supposed to die when you put em in gear. I always run at fast idle for 30 seconds to a minute before it stays running. Are the carbs and timing adjusted right? How about those spark plugs being clean?

How about some info on idle rpm....in the water BEFORE you attempt to put it in gear....that will tell maybe if it's running on all or just 2.
Also, the figures for idle timing in the manual is just a starting point, "usually" they end-up needing advanced at idle more than the manual states.
