I have a 1995 turbo jet that overheats after running @ high speed after only running a few hundred yards. I have checked for blockages.

Re: turbo jet overheats

Join the club. My turbo jet 115 does the same thing. Pull the jet unit off your boat and look inside the impeler unit for rocks or other type of blockage.take the tail unit off the jet unit. there should be a recessed sloted plug. Remove the plug, there is a spring and a ball behind the plug. Make sure there is nothing in that opening. also check the 2 holes in the jet unit and make sure those are clear. reinstall the ball and spring. There are 2 t stat in that motor that are a real bugger to get to. hope this helps

If you have a 90 degree fitting where the main engine cooling water hose attaches to the jet unit, replace it with a straight fitting and check behind it for any shell or debris.

Sucking up sand from backing off a sand bar is the most common cause of overheating those jet units. In severe cases, you may have to remove and clean out the thermostat housing, the muffler, and the cylinder heads. The is an optional water screen that attaches between the jet unit and the motor to help filter out sand and junk before it goes into the motor.

Re: turbo jet overheats

I had a similar problem. My 115 turbojetwould overheat after running at high speed. Went through all the steps to check the water passages, thermostats, etc. It ended up to be one of the pistons was bad which I found upon replacing the head gaskets. The local repair shop recommend changing the head gasket for unexplained overheating. To fix I replaced the powerhead and I am just getting it working. Hope your solution is simpler (and cheaper).
