Hello, just removed the lowerunit of my 1969 6hp Evinrude to remove the old lube and found that the driveshaft did have a hole for a pin but no pin. The exhaust housing contains a powerhead seal and I think the pin in the driveshaft should push it up to give proper vacuum and pressure in the crankcase of the lower cylinder.
Is this true? Is so what kind of pin and what lenght/material should this pin be. Is it still for sale?

thanks, Rob

Hello Rob.
This pin holds and pushes a spring and seal assembly against the powerhead and thus provides a bottom seal for the powerhead.Chances are that somebody forced the lower unit off without first removing the pin, broke the pin and lost the spring and seal assembly.
Ik ben in Zuilen geboren, bestaat Elinkwijk nog steeds?

Thanks, any idea if such a pin is still available or is it possible to make it from a piece of metal. What should the lenght be?

elinkwijk bestaat nog steeds, kijk maar op www.elinkwijk.nl

Nobody knows what kind of pin / material / lenght should be used?

I asked a local Evinrude dealer but he can't find a replacement.

Maybe I can make a pin myself if I have the details mentioned above.

Rob

What you need is an owners manual and a parts manual. You can get them off ebay for cheap.Never having owned a six horse, I really cannot tell you what sort of pin it takes. My guess is that if you read how to install it and keeping in mind that it should be stainless, you can probably very easily improvise one.As long as it does the job you should be alright.
Just for kicks. Why exactly did you remove the lower unit in order to change the lube???
good luck.

Rob,
I just pulled the powerhead off my 5.5 johnson,
and had the same problem with the roll pin sheared
Iguess over a period of time the pin either rots
or weakens, so I drilled the old pin out or what
was left of it and put a new roll pin about 3/4"
long through the shaft.
Then I slid the cup, spring, and washers over it,
which works fine. Don't forget to put the shifter
in gear when you put back the power head so you
can turn the prop to line up the spline in the
head.
Hope this helps you out
charlie boom boom
member#20518

I removed it because there was water in the lower unit and I also wanted to inspect the waterpump. I do own a manual but the material and lenght of the pin are not mentioned. I think the pin should be something that goes in very tight.

Rob

Rob - 'Roll pins' are very tight because they work like a spring. Just to be clear about what Charlie is talking about, they look like this:

The pin shown in my manual looks like a roll pin. Unfortuntely, I have no idea what the length should be, but 3/4" seems right.
