Erroded Boot?

This weekend I noticed a boot covering the "steering rod"? has erroded. I've attached pictures in case my explaination was not good, and was wondering if this is a vital must fix before next outing thing, or if it can wait "a while". Also, is this something that I should be able to do myself or should I have a shop do the work? I mainly noticed when I pulled it out of the water and saw the brownish fluid that appeared in the transom well. This is an 89 erude 120 hp V4. (PS - I'm also having an issue with my trim/tilt gauge could they be related? I'm thinking not, and will do another post on that issue if necessary). Thanks Folks!

Re: Erroded Boot?

Rick, You might try replacing the nut to the right side of your finger with a wiper nut. It has a seal that prevents moisture from getting into the steering tube...which in most cases is steel, not stainless steel..stainless tubes are available but much more expensive...The steering rod IS stainless...I suggest you "boot" the boot...The grease fittings on the bracket mount do not grease the inside of the steering "tube" as I mentioned...If you apply grease to the steering rod, make sure it's a light grease such as molylube...you might want to apply grease on the wipernut I suggested and the one on the opposite side...Go back with a new lock nut that connects the steering arm to the rod...Happy boating thorough guy and remember to hook your killswitch lanyard to your vest :)

Mine don't have a boot either. I just wipe it occasionally with the OMC Triple Guard. You can't beat that stuff for water resistance. It's just good stuff. I also store the boat with the wheel turned so the shaft is all the way inside the tube. That boot is cool looking though. Good for keeping people from getting greasy when climbing back on the boat.

If you use the motor in saltwater I would replace it, but not an emergency situation. There are many outboards out there without those boots, they are an aftermarket item...I am sure you can get one from the Megamall if you wants to...just a thought :)
