I just got this motor out of storage its a E35ELCND which i believe is a '82 35hp electric start longshaft. Does the engine have to be running in order to shift? It wont budge if i try spinning the prop and shifting at the same time. I drained the oil in the lower end and it came out very black, no signs of water but it is very black, is that ok?

Thanks
SDS

The black oil means the lower unit hasn't been serviced for a very long time SDS. Bet it smells too. Did you find any metal or sparklers in the oil?

Try this, disconnect the shift cable from the engine and try shifting manually at the engine. Sounds like something is stuck. Or, you didn't say what type of control the engine is equipped with. If it's a two handle control, make sure the throttle control is pulled back to low idle to clear the mechanical device on the motor. This keeps you from shifting or starting the engine with the throttle set for high rpm's.

Controls are disconnected. And i have made sure throttle was pulled back, and I've been trying to shift it at the engine. I have not noticed any metal particles in the oil that i drained.

Is the mechanical device that keeps you from shifting internal? I haven't noticed anything visable that could be preventing shifting. If it is internal maybe it is stuck? and would it still allow the throttle to move freely? thanks for your help

SDS

Hey SDS....sorry partner....got lost for a while...

The mechanical divice is external. On the starboard side of the engine is a verticle shaft that would prevent you from shifting should the engine be at high throttle. Also, look at the plate under the flywheel and be sure it's turned as far as it will go clockwise. This is really hard to explain in words. Unless the lower unit is trashed or rusted tight, it would almost have to be something on the engine block keeping you from shifting.

Ok, the verticle shaft is missing. I took off the water intake screens on the lower unit and loosened the shift linkage, I can shift the lower unit from there. But the linkage is frozen going up to the handle. in the process of trying to free it, it now seems as though the linkage came free of the shift handle. So now i have to reattatch it. How do i get to that?
