Hello all,

What an asset, I never new a forum like this existed!!

My problem:

My outboard seems to have a problem restarting after running. After some questionable work to get it started at the ramp(takes many false starts to get to idle nicely) and running to the fishing hole, the motor doesn't want to start back up easily. When I come off plane and move to idle speed the outboard wants to stall, only corrected by increasing the fast idle lever/choke?. If it does stall or I stop to fish, it takes requires a lot of cranks to get started again, normally requiring increasing the FIL/choke? again even after the motor is warm. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Some added info:

I had the stator replaced about 4 months ago, but have not used the boat much. The problem may have started after that. Could the timing be off???

When at Full throttle, the motor seems to miss occassionally. ~ 5500 RPMs. Normally don't run this fast but gotta avoid lightning here in FL. Thanks again

Scott

When was the last time the carburetors had a thorough dismantling and cleaning.

After that, you will want to readjust the "synch and link".

You'll need a manual to do it.

http://www.outboardrepairs.com/manuals/

I have a manual and am going to do a little reading tonight. I have no idea when the last time the carbs have been rebuilt. I bought the boat about a yr ago. What do you think the problem is? Could it be a flooding problem, i.e. too much fuel when I go to idle.

Thanks
Scott

Where can I get a rebuild kit and how much should it cost?

Hi Scott
Good job on getting a manual and reading it. Pay special attention to the section regaurging proper starting procedure. Learn what your fast idle lever does and how to use and adjust it. Also note the proper use of the primer solenoid. Once you have all this figured out, then start looking for problems with carbs and other adjustments.

Alcan,

Thanks for the response. WOuld not following the starting procedure result in these kind of problems. I know about the primer solenoid, had to use it to pull start once, and have read the starting procedures, but never used it. I will try it tomorrow and see if it starts w/o any trouble. Thanks
SCott

Re: 88' Evinrude 70, restarting problems

I think DJ hit it on the head with the carb rebuild and lync and sync. Coming off plane and dieing is not a starting problem. It is related to something else and the carbs would be a good place to start. The Red primer lever on carb needs to be inline with the primer selonoid body and should stay that way. Starting involves, pumping up the primer bulb until tight, raise the fast idle lever about half way, prime it by pushing in on the key for a count of 5, and while holding the key switch in, start it. You may have to "Bump" the key in a few times until it smooths out. Return fast idle lever to the idle position...

No offence to Scott or anyone else. All have valid points. I like to start with first things first. Scott mentioned a fast idle/choke?" lever. This statment leads me to think the opperator needs a little work first, not that there may not be other problems as well. Now there are several simple things to inspect before we tear into three carbs and spend $45. on carb kits. How about the fuel line connector? Any other loose hose connections? Fuel filter, tank vent open? Are the controls and linkage adjusted properly? Last weekend I installed another needless carb kit in my buddy's 25hp. turns out the choke linkage was bent a little and would not allow the choke to fully close when the air box was installed. First things first. Scott your manual will provide you with a step by step procedure to follow to diagnose this problem. They usually start out with a compression test.If you take the time and follow the steps, you will cover all bases and it will save you time in the long run, not to mention a ton of money.
