i have a 1955 rde-17s 25 hp. i mounted it on a '60s lone star boat. my question is; how do i connect the steering cables. there is a hole in the center of the steering bracket which has some "notches" around it like if some adapter hooks up there. does anyone have a photo or can explain what i need to do in order to connect the steering cables to this motor. thanks. john

Re: 25 hp missing part??

You need to buy a bracket to attach the cables, it has two pulleys around which the cables run and the ends are anchored somewhere around the transom, this gives a 2-1 advantage and makes steering less effort. The bracket has a quick release fitting just like the throttle and shift cables, that's what the notches are for.
Alternatively you can get a bracket to fit a single teleflex style cable.
Both types should be available from your OMC dealer, mine has them in their catalogue, but they need some convincing to order the older twin cable type!

John,
In the past, I've seen several of these brackets in old abandon/junked boats in junkyards/marinas.

Re: 25 hp missing part??

Should have mentioned I made mine. The dealer wanted a lot for the "proper" part, almost as much as I paid for the motor I think, so I made one from a piece of L-section steel. Two holes at the bottom where the pulleys attach, and one at the top for the fixing bolt, I didn't bother with a quick relase, just a s/s bolt and nyloc nut. It works as well as anything I could have bought, the steel was free from the scrap bin, so it cost me the price of two pulleys and a nut and bolt!

There's one of these brackets for sale HERE on eBay right now, it looks like it should fit your motor.
