I have a 1998 250 Johnson oceanrunner, What would be considered a good cruising rpm?? I'm looking at extending engine life and best fuel consumption.

Re: cruising rpm

The best cruising RPM is determined basically by the "sound" of the engine.

However. if your wide open throttle RPM is not within the makers recommended range, you may be lugging the engine-not good.

Post your wide open throttle rpm, we'll go from there.

Re: cruising rpm

I am getting 5500-5700 wot. I just went down in pitch from a 19 to a 17 big difference in throttle responce. The motor sounds the best around 4200 and up. Just looking for some opinions.

THANKS

OMC used to advise that the best performance/efficiency was WOT less 10-15%. I agree with DJ that most motors have a "sweet spot" that you can identify by sound. I run a pair of 1987 110 hp and they are happy at around 4500 rpm. That will change some based on load.
