Re: 58 35 lark

The Magnetos should work fine without a battery, Todd.

Because the only thing the mags share is the flywheel magnets, the points cam and the kill circuit I would look at the kill circuit first.

Gap the plugs (Champion J4C) at .030, set the points at .020, and use a 24:1 fuel mix.

Welcome to iboats. :) Let us know how you do.

Todd
welcome to i-boats.
while you have the flywheel off checking the points, take a look at the coils, if they have cracks in them replace them.
Richard

also check for any wires that have worn through the insulation and may be shorting out.

I set my points and cleaned them, coils look good, all the wires look good. Can't find any kill switch. Still have no fire. Thanks for all the help. I am new to boat engines.

Yeah, your '58 may not have a kill switch. If it did, there would be wires hooked up to each point that came out under the bottom of the mag plate where the coils rest.
Look over those coils really close - if there's any cracking moisture can work its way in and kill spark. They must be set even with the bosses on which they sit.
Feel along the spark plug leads themselves for cracks in the insulation. This is pretty much the only way these ever fail.
Is the flywheel key intact? Also, if you don't torque your flywheel nut to exactly 105ft/lbs, the flywheel key will shear when you run the engine.

Good luck!

PS - If you're working without a manual, you're flying blind and making a lot of work for yourself. Get one from Iboats, your local library (sometimes) or invest in a superior original OEM service manual from one of the following places:
TheOutboardWizard
Mastertech
Marine Engine
Ken Cook
They're worth their weight in gold.

Re: 58 35 lark

I think you should also have an over rpm circut that hooks to 1 or both sets of points that could have a short in it. a module on the side of the engine and some (if not all) had a murcury switch on the throtle, check these and there wires also. you could disconect them from the points but I would not run it that way, but just long enuf to see if this is killing the spark. anything that hooks to the points and leaves the area is suspect to having a short and killing spark.

Re: 58 35 lark

I finally got spark. I replaced points, plugs, condensors and wires. Now have hard time starting it. I cleaned out the carb, and lines. I got it to run one time and set fuel air mixture and it ran great, water pump worked, high rpm great. I shut it off and tried to restart it and it hits and idles rough for a few seconds then dies. cant get it to start. I pull and pull and it acts like it wants to hit and some times it seems to back fire.I am using new gas. Thanks for all the help with the spark problem.

Re: 58 35 lark

Sounds like some crud floated up in the carb or some other fuel delivery problem. Try shooting some premix down the carb's throat using a Windex type bottle, and see if it runs a bit on that.
You're still getting good spark on both right? Some wiring didn't get rubbed out or the flywheel key did not shear right? (in either case, spark will get weak)

EDIT: Missed the point that Ed Mc brings up down below...

Tombstone, try putting a little liquid around the areas where the high speed and low speed needles go into the carb. The packing might be bad on the carb needles, this was the case on my '57 35hp Johnson, caused it to backfire and have a bad stutter. Good Luck

Re: 58 35 lark

Are the old coils in still? Regardless of whether they 'looked' good, they are probably bad. Especially if you have old-style coils where you can see thru to the coil windings. Even if they were not cracked, if they are 'oozing' material they won't work.

Your symptoms are classic bad coils, started ok, runs a while, quits then won't restart. New coils are under $25 each and available aftermarket or dlr.

HTH.......ed

Re: 58 35 lark

I had it starting and running, but it would'nt idle. I started messing with the low speed and high speed mix and now it wont run. Where is a good starting point for the needle settings. I replaced the needle packings Coils are new. Where is a good place to find a starter for this motor. I checked all local dealers and NAPA for a manual and parts with no luck. Thanks for all the help, you guys are great. Todd

Re: 58 35 lark

Tombstone:
Starting points for the carbs are both turned in (clockwise) until lightly seated, and then turned out 3/4 of a turn for the high speed needle and 1 and 1/2 turns for the low speed needle.

Find out where your local dealers send old junk outboards to. You'll probably find your starter there cheap. Clean it up and you'll be good to go. Failing that, try Twin City Outboards.
Is your engine set up to take a starter? That is, do you have the ring gear on the flywheel, and the starter bracket? If not you'll need those too, and a solenoid.

Re: 58 35 lark

The person I got the motor from had taken the starter off years ago and put it on another motor and sold it. Thanks for the advice
