I had to take off my air silencer and silencer back plate which holds the throttle cable and the thumbwheel on the throttle cable moved. My clymer manual gives no instruction whatsoever on this 1986 90hp V4 on how many threads should be showing or what length of threads you should see.My engine is hard to start now and I would like the correct way on how to adjust my throttle cable. Thanks.

It's a matter of trial and error to get it adjusted right... Threads showing have nothing to do with it..

Just make sure the throttle opens up all the way and comes back to rest on the idle adjustment screw.

sonnyd, correct adjustment is so that the linkage returns HARD against the idle srew after being BOTH in forward full speed and reverse full speed.
I use a piece of paper, usually a dollar bill,(handy) between the screw and the block to make sure there is no space.Adjust the trunion (thumb wheel) until this happens. You don't have to run the engine to do this, just hand spin the prop if things are binding (or stiff).
What concerns me is when you pulled off the silencer back plate. Some years have a fuel enrichment valve bolted there. If yours does, you may have disturbed the lines to it,or pinched them during reassembly.
This valve 'squirts' fuel into the intake when cranking and pushing in the key to start. It is your choke.
No choke.... hard start.
DHP

throttle cable installation:
shift control to forward gear then move handle 1/2 way back to neutral pull cable to remove backlash pull throttle arm against idle stop
adjust trunion to fit in pocket do not preload the throttle cable

Re: throttle cable 90 evinrude

Thanks for the info on throttle adjustment. I found my main starting and idling problem. My bypass covers are leaking. See new topic bypass covers leaking. This started as a slow leak and I could not find it. FYI, If you really want to find a leak,1. degrease and dry the engine really well 2. wait until dark and hook up the ears and start the engine and let idle. 3. Use a super strong hand light, like a battery pak powered ryobi. 4. The reflection off of the oil and gas is incredible, it can't hide. What was happening it was leaking in the back of the engine. When I would trim up the engine for transporting on trailer, the fuel would run down underneath the carb and fuel areas making me think the leak was up front.
