I managed to snap a piston ring in my 1987 35 HP Evinrude outboard. A piece is lodged in the exhaust port.

Is this motor salvagable at a reasonable cost? I was told by the marine shop that the labor cost would take it over the value of the motor.

I haven't looked for a rebuild kit yet, does someone know a good product?

Thanks!!

Hi Sean
Your local shop gave you correct info based on their labor rates. Depending upon the amount of damage you might be able to break even on market value if you supply your own free labor. Even then it will be tight. About the only plus I can see in this case is at least you will know what you have when your done, good or bad. With out seeing your motor, my guess would be about $700. min cost. This would include your free labor, parts and some machine work.

Thanks, that helps in knowing it's salvagable!

Would it be wise to buy a full rebuild kit? Or do you think I could get away with individual parts? I found a mastertech site that sells rebuild kits for $380 for this motor.

I know the whole 'ounce of prevention...', but it's a money thing now!!

Thanks!

seanympher,

You can tell if it's salvagable by looking at the cylinder wall. If there is no grove or big scratch...you are okay there.

Usually the whole kit is cheaper than individual parts, plus it has more than what you need so...go for it and good luck.

Nam
