I puchased a boat with a 1986 Johnson 90 hp v4 outboard with a 3 wire VRO .... I then purchased a 4 wire VRO and installed it according to Instruction manual.... I tested it by grounding the Temp sensor wire and NO SOUND>>>>

Question

1. Where is the sound horn supposed to come from?

2. Where can I get a wiring schematic of the VRO system?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: NEW BOAT HELP!!!!!

horn is in the remote control most models if you have a standard remote control note key must be on for test
wiring vro 4 wire
brown this wire goes in motor harness to horn provides the signal to turn horn on off
black engine ground
gray is connected to the charging system provide rpm data to vro chip so it knows how many revs have passed between oil pressure pulses
purple hook through wire harnes to "I" side of key switch to turn "CHIP" on

note the way it works is there is a high speed clock inside of the vro it measures how many revolutions of the crankshaft between oil pressure pulses if it doesn't see oil pulses it turns on the no oil warning beep evey 1/2 second

Re: NEW BOAT HELP!!!!!

hello
the above description is not quite right. the horn you need is the self test type horn. yes its pricey but the self test portion is in the horn not the VRO.
buy the correct part and you wont have any conflicts. the tan wire has 12volts applied to it on your model and when any ground circuit is made for any alarm it compleates a current path for the horn and voila, a beep is made.

Re: NEW BOAT HELP!!!!!

OK

I found the horn... it was melted...

1. I hooked up my volt meter to it and turned on key.. I had 12V coming out.

2. I started the motor.. I still had 12V

3. I disconected the VRO wiring harness at the motor and still had 12V....

What gives here? ... without a wiring diagram ... this is amost impossible to trouble shoot... where am I getting my ground from ... obviously from the tan wire... but I thought that tan wire was connected to the VRO chip so diconecting the vro chip should eliminate ground should it not?

That tan wire is also in the overheat alarm circuit. The overherat sensors are in the heads.

Get the new horn and be done with it. You're betting on destroying an entire engine if it does not work.

Re: NEW BOAT HELP!!!!!

Yes I know the overheat sensors are in the head... Thanks.... It appears that I have a short in the tan signal wire from the VRO ... it is not at the VRO (I checked that)... but the short is somwhere between the plug that goes into the VRO and the tan wire at the horn.....

As for the HORN ... this thing is a very SIMPLE single tone 12 volt horn ... yes it is heavy duty, and radio shack does not sell HORN loud enough....

There is NOTHING special about this horn except that it is LOUDER than MOST 12 V horns except for car horns...HMMMM

This $80.00 price tag for a 12 volt horn reminds me of when I replaced the bearing on my 350cc honda motorcycle.... Honda wanted $200.00 for the bearings... I went to a bearing supply house and they provided the EXACT same bearing for $20.00 ea.

Or when I replace the bearings in my two stroke Remote control airplane motors... replacement bearings through manufacturer are $40.00 each but $12.00 through local supply and they are the same....

So what?

Well

$80.00 seems pretty steep for 12V horn.

I bet one can get the exact same somewhere for a lot less.

Re: NEW BOAT HELP!!!!!

can you get a self test horn that is compatible with the circuits and will fit in the box at radio shack for 80 dollars? by your last post it indicates you are somewhat confused as to how the system and voltage works. the post by marinemech was wrong as well as confusing but I already told you that.
good luck at radio shack :)

Re: NEW BOAT HELP!!!!!

no.. cant get a self test horn from Radio shack... they have lots of them but they are too small..... I am just thinking that a horn of the same size/power/decibal output "should" be available for a lot less money...... also... there arew two leads going to the horn... one is purple (which is live 12V with the key on) ... and the other is tan ... so has to be ground.

The horn itself I took apart... it is simply a HORN nothing else.

Re: NEW BOAT HELP!!!!!

OK ... now I follow... I went and bought the "NEW" version of the VRO alarm which has the "SELF CHECK" signal.... The old one did not have it ... anyway, the alarm works now as long as I do not connect the low oil sensor to the tan wire... I guess my low oil sensor is shot too?.... wow .. whats that going to cost now?... man oh man ... I know that this system will work good when finally completed properly ... but sure is a lot of money and hassle just for convenience sake. .. nespa?

Re: NEW BOAT HELP!!!!!

Plncrzy,
Also they prob. gave you a price for a self test horn,I bought one some years back think it was about $20. If your original horn only has two terminals on it it is not a self test horn. and like I said the test feature is incorporated in the oil tank pick assy. I guess you could use any 12v horn but the resistance of the horn would have to match the rest of the alarms circuitry, but not worth the risk

Re: NEW BOAT HELP!!!!!

Yes my OLD horn was NOT the self test type... The NEW one has the third lead (ground) and the hron gives a sweak just as you turn the key on..... as for the LOW oil sensor.... I am not going to replace it... It is a large tank... I do not drain it in one summers use (boating season is pretty short up here) :( and I am just going to depend on the VRO to tell me about high temp or no oil flow...

Thanks again for all the help... everything is working good now.

Serge
