Referring to OBJ's suggestion in my previous post "about at my wits end" of checking the timer base with a volt meter. Could any of ya'll give me some detailed instructions on how to perform this, i.e. where to apply the red and black wires of the tester and which setting should I use on the meter (I'm really in the dark when it comes to using a volt meter - I have a digital multimeter for checking ohms/volts that was given to me a while back)

The OEM Service Manual explains it, with pictures, Aggie.

I should have recommended it before. Sorry.

As for operating a DVM, go to the web site of the manufacturer and see if you can download an Operator's Manual.

Good luck. :)

Your meter needs to be a "peak reading DVOM"All you can do without it is check to see if they are shorted to ground. SEt on ohms, unplug wire. 1 end to pin one to blockground. you should have no reading.

Im in the same boat. ------> no spark ,No boat

Hey JB, found in the manual the area you were talking about (Checking Sensor and Charge Coil). Probably a stupid question but... Does the ignition switch need to turned on when performed the tests. Also, I don't have the meter at hand but don't recall if the scales on it are labeled Hi and Lo, are their some ohm ranges(numbers) that would relate to hi and lo.

If you have the OEM service manual, it will explain step by step how to perform the tests, when to have the key off and when to crank the engine. As hotrod said, a peak reading DVOM is needed. Find out about yours and read the manual.

Hotrod.....wuddya' mean no spark!!!!! It crapped out on ya'???

Re: OBJ, Dhadley, JB......

Believe it or not, most aggies can read and follow directions. My OEM service manual does not say "when to have the key off and when to crank the engine" when checking the sensor and charge coil(s). Can someone please answer the simple question - does the key switch need to be turned on when performing the ohmmeter tests on the before mentioned coils? I'm just trying to figure out why my motor won't start. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, Aggie.

Resistance reading (ohms) should only be made on inactive circuits.

Key off.

Voltage and current readings are taken with power on.

Key on.

Good luck. :)

Thanks JB, you've been very helpful.
By the way, where is The Hideout, Whitt TX. I don't have a TX map handy and was just wondering. I'm originally from TX and would love to move back someday, preferaby near a big body of water!

The Hideout is my retirement home (ranch) just NE of the rural community of Whitt (Pop. 35).

Whitt is about midway between Mineral Wells and Jacksboro, roughly 65 miles west of Ft. Worth.

You're probably pretty familiar with Possum Kingdom, it's a beautiful lake. I'm originally from Arlington and all my kinfolk live in the Ft.Worth vicinity. I've never been on Lake Mineral Wells,(I kinda remember there being a lake?) Is it nice?
