Oil Leak

Hi. First post here. I have a '90 Johnson 40hp outboard. With the engine tilted for trailering (using a motor toter) I noticed oil dripping onto the toter. It looks like its coming from a small weep hole on the front of the lower unit, where the gear case meets the exhaust housing. It's clear, not cloudy, smells like lower unit oil. Any ideas what's going on, and how hard/expensive to fix?

Re: Oil Leak

Welcome mykep -

First you need to determine if you ave a leak. Check the oil in the gearcase. If it is relatively clear you have no problem. If it is milky in color that indicates that you have a leaking seal and water is getting in (& oil out).

Most likely though what you are seeing is unburned oil from combustion which is normal for all 2 cycles.
