i was told on the motor that the **** tube is made of copper tubing and that if it gets kinked then the head has to be pulled off to fix it which is like a 3 hour job at 70 bucks an hour labor... does this seem right? supposedly the water pump is new and i was told that when the previous owner of the motor put the water pump in the copper tube did not get fed thru right and possibly is kinked and thats why it may be overheating

The "telltale" would have no effect on overheating. It is just there to let you know there is water going through the engine.

really so then i dont have to worry about the tube then, so maybe its the water pump itself or the impellar?

Yes. I suspect they/he did not get the water pick up tube seated right when they put the lower unit back on.

pull the lower unit and look also take out the thermostat and blow air up the tube and see if it flows free. they tube is hard to get out and usually does not fall out but can be pulled out if u are rough with it. dont be because its very hard to get back in the powerhead without pulling it. change the water pump and thermostat just to be safe its easy and u have nothing to lose. it will be alot cheaper then 70 bux that for sure

Can you identify the buisness end of a screwdriver? Do you own a set of wrenches? If the answer is yes, then a repair manual is worth getting.
Then you will know about boat motors.

paul moir is right on key. the 9.5 is a great motor to learn on but u need to get a manual and try to get a factory manual off ebay or somthing like that for it they tell u way more about the motor. just remember to read up on what u are doing because there are a few trick that u will learn from reading the book. and get a bottle of antiseeze and use it when putting things together it will save u from fighting stuck bolts next time u work on her.

50:1 87 octane gas to TC-W3 rated outboard oil.

Oh, check this out, there's a '71 9.5hp 'Rude manual on ebay for cheap. I don't think there's any differences but if it's anything like the OEM manuals I have it'll cover the previous year anyway. (if there are differences)
Auction, click here.

Anyone know better?

PS - the one from Evinrude is the factory one. Your actually getting it from Ken Cook Co, who has the rights to reprint the old manuals.

I hate to say it but the 1969 9.5 Johnson I had did not have a **** tube and neither does the 1975 15 Hp Johnson. They both had a exhaust relief hole but no **** tube. Are you sure it has one? Johnson's I have seen did not get **** tubes until the 1980s.

The only copper tube involved is the main waterline from the pump to the powerhead. If it came out with the lower unit the last time the pump was serviced, the tube can be a royal pain in the behind to get back up in there. I did have to pull the powerhead in order to reseat the tube on a motor last year. I probably could have done it in three hours if I hadn't spent two hours trying to feed the tube up in there without taking the whole thing apart. Good running motors, but man, what a pain to work on...

- Scott
