Re: Evinrude 50 HP manual tilt doesn't work

Jcrain,

How quickly can the CMC lift the motor from vertical to about 45* ?

I would prefer to find a Power T&T OMC unit to swap in, but if I can't get one, the CMC may be the solution.

Thanks,

Mark.

Mark42,
Haven't been to the boat in a week or so to check it, but I also have a 97 Evinrude 90hp with factory t&t and I would guess them to be about the same speed.

Mark42,
I need to add that the CMC gives you about a 5 in setback. That is, your motor sets 5 inches farther back from your transom. I had a bit of problem with the steering cable but I think it was boat related. Just to let you know.

Jcain,

Regarding the cable, I was afraid of that. Right now if I move the engine back 5", the control box will have to move back 5" because there is no slack in the cable. That would put the controls in a very awkward position.

That means another $120 (w/ship) so for a longer cable.

A few hundred here, a few hundred there.... it starts to add up. :D

For about $10 I can add a coil over spring to the gas strut to make it come up easier, but that still doesn't give me remote tilt/trim control from the helm.

It all comes down to money.

Mark

I had a 50 horse merc on a 14 ft chrysler and had to move the controls back because of short cables. It was a real pain in the neck, and elbow and shoulder. But a submerged peice of 3 inch pipe took care of the problem for me.

Re: Evinrude 50 HP manual tilt doesn't work

Mabo21, sorry I am late getting to your post.

If the shell connector is adjusted so that the unit "drops" smoothly and steadily as opposed to slowly edging downward, then the "upward" pressure you apply to the engine will be considerably less than it would if the engine drops slowly.

It will drop slowly (very slowly) if out of adjustment. When you pull up on the engine you are fighting the gas assisted cylinder. It wants to keep the unit down. It gives ground very slowly and by the time you have the unit up.... you are exhausted.

Let me emphasize that when you lift up on the lower unit... you will feel resistance even when correctly adjusted. But not so much as to strain your back like in the other situation.

Does this help?

Re: Evinrude 50 HP manual tilt doesn't work

I had this same problem on my 'rude 40 hp. I got is all fixed last summer. I first replaced the cylinder (expensive) and then found out that my cable was bad as well (expensive again). The advice on this board details what needs to be done perfectly. It worked well all summer. Then, this winter (I am in cold Utah) it has become difficult again. I have tried to adjust it but it is still very sluggish. I assume this is due to the cylinder being very cold. 32 degrees in the partially frozen lake. Can anyone offer any suggestions?
