Hello,

Troubleshooting a 1970 Johnson Seahorse 6HP - 6RL678. Have the Clymer manual, but need help.

Very very hard to start. Have already checked fuel flow - good flow and already installed new fuel pump.

Checked compression on both cylinders - one is about 70, the other high 70's.

Checked spark (plugs are brand new and properly gapped)- lower cyliner is sparking - good blue strong spark, loud pop. Upper cylider - no spark from wire, no noise.

Points/condenser are new and checked/double checked point gap (.020).

Could the coil on the bad wire be bad? I pulled the flywheel. Coils are these big brown looking square modules, with a green metal bar surrounding it. Both look solid - no cracks.

Plan on swapping the coils to see if the good coil will make the upper cylinder wire spark.

Also wanted to confirm how to remove the coils properly as the manual doesn't seem to jive with what I have:

I unscrewed the leads from coil
Removed the 3 screws from the green metal bar (is that the magnet?), and the coil pulled out - but the wire remained in place.

Any help/insight appreciated.

ALSO - does anyone know part number for replacement coil?

Thanks.

Rick

Re: Hard starting - no spark - coil question

coil part number is 584477
good test to reverse coils
green metal bar is called laminatios flywheel contains the magnet
when installing coils: insert wire into coil make sure a good fit
place coil in position install screws
hold coil in line with area that they sit on so that flywheel will miss them(i wish i had a photo) tighten screws make sure wires aren't pinched and reconnect to points set flywheel on crank turn over to check for binding adjust coils if necessary good luck

Thanks Marinemech,

I just reversed the coils. Guess what? Now the top wire is firing strong, and the lower wire is not.

Coil is bad. Will order new coil, and can't wait to fire her up!

Rick
