We are ressurrecting this motor and took it to a lake to doing some testing. We did fine at low to medium rpms but when we turned it up to see what it has the R-N-F lever pops into N. Why? How do we make an adjustment? How do you adjust the RPM's on this motor?
Thanks For any assistance, Tim

It's usually because the clutch dog is worn when a motor pops out of gear. Asuming the motor is set up right- linkage, timing, etc., the max RPM's can be changed by changing the pitch of the prop.

Hi Tim

To get a better diagnose of the problem, try following: When you get near the speed when it starts to jump, place a person where he/she can reach the gear shift lever. Try to hold it in forward position, and increase speed. If it gets possible to get to higher speed before the jumping starts, and gear lever then if forced against neutral, worn clutch dog is the culprit. On your motor, which is a horizpntally split gearcase, changign clutch dog is an operation that can be done by a normally mechanical inclined person, guided by a repair manual for the motor. Clutch dog is around 80 $ as far as I rember, still available at Johnnyrude dealers. Running it this way will spread the harm to the lobes in forward gear too.
