Started having trouble starting motor, now motor will not start. Motor is 89 gt175 johnson, I have found gas coming out of top of vro, oil lines have been taken off. Cannot find rebuild kit at boat dealers, have found one at napa auto parts but they only have one for a 83 175. Is the vro on an 83 the same on 89?

Re: vro rebuild

When you say top of VRO, do you mean at the seams?

Re: vro rebuild

Zantz the gas is coming out of the left side top of the vro. It looks like a small ring about the size of a pencial eraser. When I pump the bulb the gas is coming from around it. The motor did not quit all at once. It just kept getting harder to start, after it started no problem. Did notice that rpms had droped off from 5600 rpms to 4800 rpm. Took boat to lake and ran SeaFoam threw motor to decarb. ran fine all day, could only get 4800rpms. did have hard time starting when first put boat into lake. Put motor in water tank at house would not start, that is when I found the gas coming from the vro.

Re: vro rebuild

mil2 - I am not a VRO guy but I would not run that motor until you get it fixed. You can cook a motor pretty quick with no oil.

I'll take a look at mine tonight to see if I can figure out where you are talking about.

Sorry I didn't get back to you quicker. I had to travel out of town on business.

Mil2,

Stop!

When you suspect a VRO problem the FIRST thing you should do is begin pre-mixing your fuel 50:1 with quality TCW3 oil. This will ensure you do not cook your motor while trouble shooting. If the VRO is functioning the extra oil will only make some extra smoke. Cheap insurance.

Step 2 Go to the FAQ section on Iboats lots of good VRO info

Then trouble shoot.

I am not a mechanic but I have cooked a 90hp engine by not following this simple rule.

Mac

Re: vro rebuild

Hello mil2.

83's did'nt have VRO pumps. VRO pumps didn't come till 84' on the larger engines. NAPA stores will carry rebuild kits for regular fuel pumps but not VRO pumps.

Apparently you have been premixing if the oil line has been disconnected. The problem seems to be the leak. Please post the pictures of the area of the leak. This should get rid of a lot of confusion as to where the leak is.

Thanks.

Re: vro rebuild

Mil2,

V12mac is right! I only assumed you are pre-mixing. And there are great articles in the FAQ section.

According to OBJ, my pictures won't help you. My pics are of a VRO pump. It sounds like you have a regular pump.

Re: vro rebuild

Might help Zantz. His engine came with the VRO pump. The oil was then later disconnected and only the gas side of the pump used. He would then have to premix. But I can't picture the leak area unles the housing is cracked on top.

Re: vro rebuild

Ok I will post them when I get home tonight.

I think I know what he is talking about. There is a little plug on top that leads into the fuel chamber of the VRO. If it has come loose, the fuel pressure would push it up and leak fuel around it. When I post the pictures, I will highlight it.

Re: vro rebuild

Zantz picture "B" that is where the gas is coming from,if this is a plug could you tell me if there was a line at that location? The VRO had already been disconected before I bought the boat. And I have been premixing. Would this be an easy fix or do I have to replace the VRO? Thanks everyone for the help.

Re: vro rebuild

I bought a non-vro fuel pump replacement kit for my 86 225 from my OMC dealer that works great. Bolts right up, $150 and your done. No guess work.
Mac

Re: vro rebuild

Mil2,
A line does not hook up there. That is a plug that covers part of the mechanics for the alarm system. I'm no expert, but when I was testing my VRO and figuring out how it works I noticed that plug. I figured out it is directly over the pulse actuator arm. I speculate it is there for assembly purposes at the factory. Maybe after they put the actuator arm in through the hole they put a plug in it. You might be able to get away with gluing it down with some sort of Epoxy if money is tight and you can't afford a new pump.
