No Spark

Have a 65 Hspr 1972 Evinrude Electric shift. Replaced the solonoid and the power pack, and the two wires on the side of the solonoid, one going to the key, the other to the safety switch in the control box where it shifts. Still no spark. What's the next step to further check out the problem. Should'nt be the coils- all 3 wouldn't go bad. Can I override some part in order to zero in on the cause. Thanks,
Skip

Re: No Spark

Remove all spark plugs, then rig a spark tester whereas you will have a 7/16" gap.

If no spark, or if the spark is weak, disconnect the main RED electrical connector at the engine. Now using a small jumper from the battery terminal of the starter solenoid to the 3/8" nut terminal of the solenoid that engages the solenoid (not the 3/8" ground nut), crank the engine again and observe the spark.

If you now have spark, the usual problem is that a short exists in the ignition switch, in which case replace the switch. If still no spark, it's usually a case that the powerpack has failed, or the engine is cranking too slow or the stator under the flywheel is faulty. Let us know what you find.

Re: No Spark

No spark at all. What's the procedure for taking the flywheel off to get to the stator. Are there any other checks that can be done before this major undertaking is addressed.

Thanks.
Skip

Re: No Spark

That's not a major undertaking, however before doing that, keep in mind that the powerpack may also be at fault, in which case replace it.

To remove the flywheel, use a flywheel puller that will incorporate three bolts which will screw into the three threaded holes surrounding the flywheel nut.

When re-installing the flywheel, the nut torque is exactly 105 foot pounds. Failure to torque that nut will result in a sheared flywheel key and damaged flywheel/crankshaft tapers.

Re: No Spark

You can test the stator before removing the flywheel. You should get a certain ohmage across the wires ( you probably have 4 wires) so across 2 of the wires you should read resistance and also resistance across the other pair of wires. If you read a short (zero ohms) or an open (infinite ohms) then your stator is bad. I don't have the manual with the resistance specs for your motor, but looking for either a shorted or open condition will give u an indication of whether the stator is good or bad.

Re: No Spark

The ohm reading between the Brown wire and the Brown/Orange wire should be 630 ohms +/- 75 ohms.

Re: No Spark

Powerpack is new. Do I take the reading where the wires connect to the powerpack.

Thanks,
Skip

Re: No Spark

Follow the brown and brown/orange wires from the stator to whatever they connect to, in your case, the powerpack. Remove them from the powerpack and take the reading.
