Long story short, my 1996 150 Johnson FICHT ran for approximately 15 seconds with no water while being trailered from the water. Should it be ok or should I just go ahead and get it rekitted? Also, what is the approximate cost of having a shop do this for me?

If it's just out of water. You *might* be okay. However, I would definitely remove the lower unit and check the impeller. cost, I don't know, but it should not be that hard...be sure to have the correct gaskets handy. If it hasn't been replaced for a long time, it's worth to do.

Good luck,

A person could probably buy the parts and manual and still come out ahead as opposed to having a dealer replace the impellar.
my 2c

150$ to 200$....do it yourself..
Parts under 40$
15 seconds from out of the water, dang it takes 1/2 of that to drain out then it has to dry up. I wouldn't worry about it has long as you have a good flow in the water..(not on the muffs that is)

I only say that because many times I found myself starting the engine and finding that the muffs fell off from the hose pressure more than once..10-15 seconds..never had a problem.. and that motor was taken to a wrench for tune up and my impeller was fine. Just my opinion. nothing wrong with checking it tho.

I tend to agree with hotrod. I know it is not a good thing to do but I doubt a few seconds would damage the impeller enough to worry about it, especially if you are getting good water flow.

The REAL questin is: when was the last time it was replaced?

If over one year ago, you're overdue.

That's the "second real question" DJ. The #1 real question is; Is a little preventative maintenance better than taking a chance that the impellor is toast and you could toast the entire engine. Hey, its your motor Hot Reels, Take who's ever advise you feel comfortable with.

15 seconds, at what, 900 rpm, rubber against SS.
There's a good chance it's history.
A friend of mine did the same thing and cooked his impeller.
It's easy enough to drop the lower unit and pull the pump. If you're unsure of your abilities at that point, take the lower unit to a dealer for pump replacement.
But remember, if this engine is anything like the earlier models, don't turn the shift rod. That adjusts the length.
Don't ask me how I know.
