Just replaced the water pump on this motor. Good thing too, looked like original equipment. Anyway, all seemed to have gone well.........

Put the muffs on and the water pressure pumped up to a steady 10, as opposed to the wavering 2-6 previous. Did notice that some water appears to be coming out from between where the lower unit bolts up. Is this normal? Never noticed it before. More concerning though........ after few minutes of idle the telltale quits. Pressure gauge stays right at 10, but no stream. If I shut down and restart stream returns. Ran for a bit(not very long but seemed like an eternity, I got too nervous) and gave it a gentle rev with no effect.

I am hoping I didn't srcew things up too badly. I did verify that the water tube is in place, but haven't a clue where to go next. Some sort of blockage in the cooling system itself?

Thanks for any input, I've gotten quite an education here already............ ;-)

/mike

Mike, I am not a mechanic but I have fiddled with a few of these on other motors.

First things first, part of that old impeller could have gone for a ride through your motor and stopped right at the nipple of the tell tale. Remove the hose and check for blockage in the hose or the nipple. If you hook up the muffs and fire the motor with the hose disconnected (aiming away from the motor) is there water shooting out?

Mac

Thanks v12mac, I'll check that out in the AM.... I can also get on the lake and let it out a bit, maybe move whatever might be in there on through. Any thoughts on the water at the bolt on junction?

/mike

I have your motor and mine doesn't **** water for 10 seconds or so at startup. But once it starts, it doesn't stop.

I Don't know about the water shooting out around the lower unit. The pros here will be able to tell you.

When you took out the old impeler were any chunks or blades missing?

Mac

do you mean at the casings ,where they meet...mine did on old johnson, i used gasket cemet and it stopped, i think you have to file them smooth...
ask someone else before doing what i said as i am no expert, i think you mean its leaking what the housings meet...which you can just lower and fix not take it completly off

Re: water pump difficulty w/1994 V-4 120

The last time I replaced mine and started it, I got very little water coming out of the tell tale. Let me tell you I was doing some cussing at that point. Then I found a stick, poked it up there, and out pops an insect cocoon. Check for blockage.
I believe OMC calls out to put some sealant on the housing surfaces. I don't put sealant on these surfaces and get the same thing you are seeing. I think it's just the water that has filled the housing. Turn off the water and it stops sqirting.

Thanks for all the input guys. Had her out on the water all day with no problems. This is the first time I've done this on an outboard(plenty of mechanic stuff on land based machines) so I'm just a little nervous that I'm doing things correctly.

I'll certainly have more questions in the future and really am happy I've found a place where people not only know what they're talking about, but are willing to share......... Thanks again!

/mike
