I've replaced the thermostat, and tonight I replaced the impeller, the impeller that was in the housing was a little wore but didn't seem to bad, there was no plate for the impeller to ride on, the surface of the lower unit were the impeller was spining on is polised and smooth but standing behind the unit just to the left were I assume the water travels to the water tube is some what recessed, inside the pump housing is kind of pitted and one little groove all the way around. When I bought the impeller I asked about a complete pump he made it sound like they couldn't get one, I checked the parts page here on "iboats" and all they listed was the impeller, as the title says while in a big garbage can over flowing with water all I get is a warm to hot fine misty spray of water while idling for 3-5 min., is this normal till I crack the throtle on the lake? and not to sound ignorant what is wot all I think of is womp on throttle. thank you for your time from a very fustrated okkie from minnesotie

I just replaced the entire pump on my 1960 40 hp. and it is still available from the dealer. You should be getting what I would call a heavy mist. Mine was not much more than steam until I replaced it. I will get you the part number and post it.

Scott

NOT!!

Do not EVER give a 2 stroke WOT without a load on it! Not unless you intend to turn it into scrap. A garbage can cannot keep water in it with a 40hp at full throttle in gear.

The part # is 0379775 for the complete pump. I would also change the lower pump seal while in there. The upper seal comes in the kit. I got the same response from my dealer when I called on it in fact 2 dealers told me it was obsolete. But I got the part # here and they had it on the shelf.

Good Luck Scott

Re: Misty spray 1961 johnson 40 hp

I had a similar question a month or so ago with my 1958 35 horse Johnson. Everything you mentioned was right but it only gave a light mist. I removed the thermostat, left the cover off, and started the motor with it in a barrel. At first almost nothing came out, then all of a sudden I got a strong stream of water out of the thermostat opening. It pumped about like a wide open garden hose. I had poked down the hole a little with a small wire. I think there was a blockage of some kind, but it blew out so fast and suddenly that I didn't see what it was. After that, the problem was solved. Might be worth a try. At least you'll learn if water is pumping through the system.
Tom
