Re: powerpack

It should be a 'black box' (literally, it's black in color), mounted with 2 screws to the side of the engine block or head. There would be several plug-style of connectors along with connections to the coils.

If you don't have this, maybe it's not an '89 but older. The box should be staring you in the face when you pull the motor cover.

BTW, sometimes the kill switch goes bad and grounds out the box. Isolate the kill switch by pushing the black pin from the kill switch out of the connector plug where it goes into the power pack. Then try it and see if you have spark. If so, replace the kill sw.

Sometimes, all you need to do is unplug all the connections, clean them out and maybe a little spray with WD etc.

You may want to do resistance checks of the charge coils and trigger, but you'll need a service manual and VOM for that.

But it's fairly common for the box to be the root of a no-spark problem, once you've eliminated the kill switch as the Prime Suspect.

HTH and let us know what you find out......ed

Re: powerpack

I can't speak for the '89 25hp because I haven't had one or have any service information about them. However, I used to have an '89 Evinrude 40hp 2cyl. This motor did indeed have the power pack under the flywheel. In fact, it had an integrated sensor/powerpack under there. If you are not seeing one anywhere, I'd say there is a good chance your motor has the same ignition system. Why don't you pop your flywheel and take a look? If it has a semicircular module marked CD2USL on top, that's the powerpack/pickup.

The powerpack supplies energy to the ignition coils. So, if you have no spark, it certainly could be due to a faulty power pack
