posted September 23, 2004 11:30 AM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Second time on line- Have a 1985 Evinrude 140H/P V4 on a 17" Lund that I purchased in June. VRO Pump on it seems to be working but occassionaly the alarm goes off. I ran it over the summer and simply added oil to the gas mixture 50-1 have now put it up for the winter and would like to take the guess work out of making sure that the vro pump is in fact pulling oil from the reserve tank. I want to add an oil pressure guage. Can it be done. What pressure should I get a guage to read and where do I put it? Plugs look great after running and compression 3@ 122 and 1@118 and pressure test showed 6% leakage.
Any help would be appreciated.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Oil pressure

You can add a pressure gauge to the output side but it would tell you what the mixed (gas and oil) pressure is. We assume you want to read the oil pressure seperately. Correct?

Re: Oil pressure

I am not sure of which pressure I require. I was thinking the pressure that the VRO is pulling from the reserve tank to the motor. I figured that way I know that the engine is getting oil.If the guage shows pressure or suction and I look along the hose and their is no leaks, the oil has to be going into the motor.

Re: Oil pressure

I am very new to marine motors. So I hope I don't sound tooo dumb. My understanding from the fellow I bought the boat and motor from said that the vro pump on the motor supplies both the gas and oil to the motor(I would guess that it pre-mixes it). I have been mixing oil with fuel in the tank because I just didn't trust a ringing bell(I also have a severe hearing problem and was afraid I would miss the warning). Can I just simply plug the oil intake at the motor. Will this affect the VRO pump on the fuel side at all? Again, any answers are greatly appreciated.

Re: Oil pressure

plugging the oil in side is ok run motor at 50:1 also disconnect the wire harness that comes out of the pump this will not harm motor or pump
