Hello all.

I've got a 1978 Johnson 150HP that I'm wanting to install a separator on after searching the archives here and seeing the opinions on them (and there are a lot). I thought I would post here about a recommendation for my specific motor. Several people seemed to think highly of this one at iboats.

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...nt_category=water separator&*******=400734538

Will this one work well for my older motor, or are there any other suggestions?

As always, thanks for your time and comments.

Trailer Boats magazine tested a bunch of fuel filters in their ( I think ) March issue of this year. The Tempo filter was their "best buy" choice.

Whether or not it will work with your motor- it doesn't matter the age of the motor, but the fuel flow. Just check that out. I would imagine your 150 would never suck more than 20 GPH, and from vague memory, I'd be surprised if you'd find a "common" filter that has a capacity less than 50 or so GPH. But that's really the only thing you need to check out.

The price on that Tempo unit looks great. Another thing I'd advise is to pick the brand based on what you can get easily locally. Unless you stockpile a couple of filters so you always have them on hand, you want one you can buy when you remember you really need to change it before the weekend trip you're starting early next morning. That factor is probably more important than any, in my opinion.

I also like the kind you can drain, but that's just a personal preference. When in doubt change it (or drain it) as the case may be. Don't skimp on that part.

If you install the Tempo fuel filter assembly, you can use any brand of spin-on filter that fits that style that uses an 11/16" thread, which means anything that fits a Merc or Yamaha plus a number of aftermarket brands.

If you want one that drains, Racor sells a kit that will fit your Tempo, since it is the Merc style filter. The kit includes a filter element and a plastic bowl with a drain valve. They cost a lot more that the regular spin-on filters from other companies.

Get that issue of Trailer Boats that tested the filters, they list the amount of water that they hold, the prices, and their recommendations.

JC: As Seahorse said, Racor is the brand I use. I have a clear plastic drain bowl, but they also make a metal drain bowl. Most online marine companies as well as racor website have the various types and specs. Good luck.
