I have a 1967 40 horse evinrude with elecric start. I have tested the battery leads while running, but I only get 12V. I ran into a dead battery this summer, but I was able to put it on a manual chrger and bring it back. I think the motor is not charging the battery, can you help?

Re: no charge

I have a 1970 Evinrude 40 hp. The Manual shift models don't come with a generator. If you have a pull starter on your motor this is the case. I myself bought a generator, regulator, bracket, belt, studs & bolts for a 1970 Johnson 40 hp. on E-bay and now I don't have that problem anymore.

Re: no charge

Your cheapest alternative would be to get an onboard charger. Or put your current charger on a lamp timer and let it charge the battery for an hour or two each day. Get a dual-purpose starting/trolling motor battery next time you have to buy one. They stand-up to inconsistant charge levels better. The generator systems aren't terribly reliable, and parts are expensive if you can find them. But they certainly work if you keep them polarized.

Re: no charge

I got my set-up for $125.00 plus shipping from a marine place in Canada. The other Idea is good but if you can find some one parting one out a motor around that year there is no reason you can't get it cheap. :D
