I want to check the timing on my 1978 140 HP Evinrude engine. I read that you have to have it in a test tank with a test wheel installed. What is a test wheel, where can I buy one, and how much should it typically cost?

Re: Test Tank / Test Wheel

A test wheel has a exhaust hub just like your regular prop. Around the hub are cast a series of vanes inside of a outer ring which makes it look somewhat like a turbine wheel. It's purpose is to load the engine, but reduce turbulance in the test tank. It has to be run in a test tank with built in baffles, as it will still create a lot of turbulance with the larger engines. Just any large tank won't work as all the water will be thrown out before you reach anywhere near full throttle. The last price I have on a test wheel was about $255, and you can trust they have'nt went down.

What a lot of people do is cut down an old aluminum prop and do the timing on the trailer, with the motor in the water. Make sure that you have the boat weel tied to the trailer and it is best to have two people and ease the throttle up slowley.
