I just got a 12 foot gamefisher with a 5hp Evinrude Angler outboard. From the SN I determined it's a 1965 model. The first time out with it it ran great, started on two pulls. This second time out, I noticed alot of water pouring out of the engine after tilting it up to beach the boat. So I started it up with the cover off and noticed water shooting up and hitting the bottom of the fly wheel. It's coming from a circular depression with a hole located on the starboard side just to the right of the spark plugs and behind the fuel pump. Some one suggested the water cooling system may be plugged. I can't find mention of this "relief port" in the Glenn Motor Repair and Tune-up guide on Evinrudes. Can anyone offer any advice on identifying the source of this problem?

Thanks

Re: '65 Evinrude Angler water leak problem

Welcome to Iboats, Jac!

If this is at the top of a tube like section cast into the block, that's not a 'relief port' - it's a drilled passage in the cooling system!
It's supposed to have a small aluminum disc pressed into it to block it off. Yours may have popped out for whatever reason, but frozen water left in the powerhead would be my guess. You should be able to get a replacement from the dealer. Just coat it in sealer and drop it in the hole so it rides on the ridge in there so that the convex side faces up. Then tap it a couple times with a punch and hammer until it tightens up against the block.

Hi Paul,

I think you have it pegged! Thanks for the unbelievably fast reply. I'll check in with the dealer and hopefully they will have the part.

BTW, I found an original service manual for this particular engine available on ebay. Do you think it's a worthwhile purchase?

Thanks again!

Jac - about that manual - absolutely yes. The manual is still reprinted, but sells for $40USD new. It is the very best manual for your engine; Clymers and Seloc both run a distant second. I'm not familiar with the manual you have.
Make sure you're getting the service manual and not just the parts manual. The parts manual only lists the part numbers for all the components of the engine.

Re: '65 Evinrude Angler water leak problem

Thanks again Paul.

When I got home today I looked at the motor and I'm not sure if the cylindrical housing you referred to is the leak point.

I see a vertical silvery aluminum plug about the size of a half dollar on the side of the motor below the fuel pump that looks like a freeze plug. However, the spot that is shooting out water is about the size of a dime, is higher up and horizontal. It looks like it was painted, but most of the paint has peeled off. I took two pics; one is the leak point, the other is a larger pic to provide a point of reference. But it looks like I can't post them as an attachment. If you have a Yahoo! account, I can post them to my briefcase and let you view them, or I can email them. They are both pretty small in size.

What do you think?

Fire me an email and I'll post them here. Well, as best my freebie web account will allow anyway. :)
Don't worry about the size, etc. There's no limits on the account and I've got DSL to download them with. Paul.Moir@ns.sympatico.ca
I think I know which plug you're talking about now, but best to be sure.

PS - to anyone who's interested - I've posted my email address many times here and I also have it in my profile. I have never, ever received a piece of junk mail.

Here are the pics:
Pictures, click here.

Ok, that was the hole I was talking about. Seems like there's a small hole corroded through the plug. If that was mine, I might try plugging it with JB weld or a thickened epoxy putty like the stuff they sell at auto repair places (Tech-Steel, that sort of thing). Failing that, you can drill out the center of the old core plug, pry it out, and replace it with a new one if it's still available. That is a coolant passage underneath the plug, and it's pressurized since it's before the thermostat.

Alright! That's good news, as it sounds like a simple fix. First I'll see if I can get a replacement plug and then pry it out with light pressure. If that plan fails, I'll resort to an epoxy plug.

Thanks.
