2004 Johnson 30 Hp Stalling out

I purchased a 2004 2 stroke Johnson 30 hp. electric/remote engine in July this year. I've put 40 hours on it to date. The engine at idle or low rpm continuously stalls out. Especially as I approach a dock or my larger boat. I've returned the engine to the dealer twice since July and the engine continues to "sneeze" and then stall. I've noticed that the carburator is missing it's cover. The dealer said it didn't matter and that some of the engines come from the factory without the carb cover(?). I'm very dissapointed in Johnson/Bombardier and am contemplating selling the engine and getting a Yamaha. Is this engine a lemon (?) or just need this new carburator rebuilt?

Are you saying that when you remove the engine cover that you can look into the carburetor throats? No air silencer cover?

Yes, I can look directly into the carb. throat. I noticed there are three screw holes on the exterior of the carburator that appear to hold a cover?

Edit: It seems that another fella has posted a similar issue with repect to a 25 hp 2004 model that had no silencer cover installed on carbs. This is a new one by me.Thereafter ,your stalling issue is either too lean on idle mix or the carburetor linkage is out of adjustment.

I appreciate your reponse! I'm kind of kicking myself about this matter. I'll again take it back and tell him to get the "air silencer cover" and install it. My confidence in Johnson Outboards is questioanble at best. I've had such great experience over the years with Yamaha and even Mercury Engines. However, at $2,800.00 for a new 2004 30 hp. (remote controls incl) I thought I'd try Johnson again. I was hoping Bombardier would reinstate the quality and dependability of the old 1960's and 70's OMC engines. I hope the air silenecer works, along with quieting the motor's loud operating sound. I know this is NO four stroke, but you can hear this engine over my twin Yamaha Saltwater Series 200's!

I have a 1990 30 hp Johnson. My parts catalog does not show an air silencer cover. I don't think that series of motors (20,25 & 30) used them.

I had a 2000 25 hp Johnson. It had not air cover, and I don't think any of them do. Mine also had a lean sneeze and stall situtaion. All it took was to back out the idle mixture screw 1/4 turn and it was totally gone. There will be some orange wax like stuff on this screw. Should be on the site of the carb.

BVH is exactly right - these motors have a good reputation as sturdy and reliable. If ignition is fine ( and a new one must be ) just tell the dealer to take his time to adjust iddle mixture and RPM on your boat in water, which should have been doen by installing the motor. You can check the sync'n linck setting yourselves by checking that the throttle opener roller doesnt touch the cam on statorplate just below flywheel at iddle. But this should by done by the dealer. If he doesnt bother about a 30HP he is the one not living up to his reputation !!

bvh&g dane are correct have dealer adjust motor while on your boat in water not in test tank
note air boxes have not been on these motors for years also all JOHNSON and Evin. must warm up on idle if not they tend to run poorly
and use xd-30 johnson oil min and champion plugs although they probably haven't been changed yet

Sounds to me that your problem is the dealer and not the motor. Be firm on getting him to fix it.
