I have a 1978, 3 cylinder 70hp evinrude.
Problem slow cranking speed to start then occasionaly spins quick and starts.
What have I done ? New Battery, soleinoid, Starter reconditioned. When I remove a plug and wind over the motor it spins freely and starts on 2 cylinders. I have removed each plug with same result. will start on any 2 with no worries. Am thinking excessive back pressure?
Could faulty reed valves cause this? Help not rich and wife will kill me if it costs a fortune

Bazzle :D

Ahoy, Bazzle.

Welcome to iboats. :)

I suspect high current cables and their connections are causing your trouble. Check all connections for good electrical connection (take them off and clean thoroughly) and inspect cables for under-the-insulation breakage or corrosion.

The most common culprit is the battery ground cable to engine block connection.

Good luck, and let us know what you find. :)

Vinegar dissolves calcium deposits well, if that's what they really are, Bazza.

Also, household products such as "Lime Away" work well.

Ultimate calcium removers are oxalic acid products like "ZAP!" and "Barkeep's Friend".

Good luck. :)

Thanks for the help. Belive it or not I replaced the wiring and it still would not work. Anyway took the starter that I had serviced ( i Thought) back to the workshop. They did a swap and its going well. Obviously they did not bench test it properly the first time. Anyway Thanks for the help and will updat you after I take it for a good run.

:D

Boat running beautifully. Starter Motor was the problem all along. But the other suggestions were done. Can't complain It needed some TLC

Bazz
