I recently installed a lower unit oil seal kit with a new waterpump kit with new impeller, and now my motor will only go in forward and reverse, no neutral. Is this most likely the toggle switch on my gearshift box? Also, there is not any water coming out of the two water jets directly below the motor in the back. I haven't run the motor very long (afraid to run it much until I have the gear thing worked out) -- Does the temostat have to reach a certain temp before water comes out of those holes?
Thanks,
Lenny

Welcome to iboats.

Make sure you reconnected the shift wires right. The blue and green wires can be confused because after a while they discolor and it's hard to tell which is which. You might just try swapping them to see what happens. If the problem occurred just after reinstalling the gearcase, I'd concentrate there. Could be a bad switch on the remote control, but I'd look closer at the motor.

Water will mostly come out of the holes when the boat is in water and more when the motor is warm. If you're running it on a hose, then you should be able to see water pouring out from the prop.

Welcome aboard Lenny!!

Have you got the leads to the lower unit connected correctly.....green to green and blue to blue? We'll take for granted the unit shifted OK before the job was started? With these lower units, there is no neutral until the engine is started. Gear lube topped off?

Out of the water, you will see very little if any water come from the exhaust relief ports. The exhausted water goes down through the exhaust leg and out the prop hub.

Post any other info you may have for us...thanks.

I'll check it out and report back. This website is great! I just completed a total boat and motor overhaul lasting six months, (down to and including the stringers!) -- Sure wish I had found this site earlier. Thanks for the tips. Lenny

Re: 1970 60HP Evinrude shift problems

If you find that the shift switch is bad, I assume that it is the switch activated by the throttle handle, I created a circuit that shifts the tranny. It has to be manually switched, but it was better than buying one from OMC which was gonna cost me ~$80-100
my motor is a '71 60hp Johnny and I worried myself about the lack of water from the two relief holes. So I remvoed the powerhead and LU coverings to find that it is only exhaust relief holes. At WOT I only have a little water come out.
Good luck

Gears are working fine now. However, I don't see the water coming out of the prop as suggested. (water hose hook up). I haven't run the motor very long...does the thermostat have to open up before I see this flow of water?
lenny

No, the water should come out from the prop after just a few seconds. When you put the gearcase back on, are you sure the water pipes engaged the pump? There are plastic tubes that help guide them in, but they pop out of position very easily. Glueing them into the water pump wouldn't be a bad idea. The thermostat helps keep the water in the powerhead longer to achieve a good operating temperature, but the pump is always pumping a lot of water and the excess will come out of the prop as well as what is cooling the cylinders.
