For several days I've been working on a "Johnson" outboard. I've been looking for a service manual and when I matched up the model number it comes out as Evinrude. The numbers on the nameplate are 115593E, serial number J0004436. Can you tell me what I am actually working on???
blt

Yup, that's a 1975 'rude you have there. Probably the cowlings got switched at one time - which is a pretty common occurance.
Just to be sure, make sure the serial number on the nameplate matches the one on the powerhead's welsh plug (quarter sized silver disc pressed into the aft area of the engine block). It's conceivable that the transom clamp got salvaged off a 'rude afterall.
What does this mean to you? Pretty much nothing. Except what colour paint you have on the engine.

BLT....that is a 115hp 1975 year, Evinrude. Don't make any difference though....'cept if yer lookin' at color...both engines are the same.

Wellllll....best thing to do is take it to a local John/Rude dealer and see what ya' got. The motor will either be Prestolite or Bosch...I think. Prestolite is the easiest to work with. The reservoirs are different in shape. I believe the Prestolite motor and reservoir are still available.

Re: johnson or evinrude???

OBJ: I'm pretty sure it's Prestolite--3 wire, but it does not have a flange to install--just a straight cylinder. The top housing w/the armature(sp?) fits down into the lower and is held together with 2 long screws. One of the reasons I'm having such a hard time is the manual the guy I bought the motor from covers several different size engines and isn't specific to my 115 v4. I'm looking for a place to buy a service manual. blt
