Hi
I've got a 1986 Johnson 9.9 that has been fitted with remotes. I want to use it as an auxillary engine on my fishing boat and therefore want to convert it back to tiller control.

I found a used tiller handle and the rod which goes through the engine cowling, with the cogs on, but I can't see how it will fit.

I have an older, (1977), 9.9 with tiller control, but the bracket where the handle fits, and the cowling, looks different to my 1986 engine. on the 1977, there is a hole in the bracket and cowling for the rod to pass through, but on the 1986, there isn't a hole in the bracket, and no hole in the cowling. There is a rubber plug which looked as if it might have to be removed to fit the tiller control, but it seems as if it is in the wrong place.

None of my manuals show tiller control, so any advice here would be very, very useful. Is this motor built for remotes only? Or is there a kit or something that I will have to buy?

Thanks in advance
Steve

Re: Converting 9.9 Johnson back to tiller control.

Steve....the 86's' used a cable assembly to operate the throttle instead of the shaft and cog assembly. The handle from the 86' won't work on your 77'.

Thanks OBJ,
That explains it then!

Will a tiller from a different size engine, with the cable type control, fit this engine? Or will it have to come off of a 9.9 or 15? I'll struggle to get a used one if it's only the 9.9 or 15 that will fit.

Thanks
Steve

Hmmmmm....dunno for sure Steve. Next size is 20hp. I'll check parts when I get home or maybe one of the other guys will know right off before then. Right off I'd wanna say off another 9.9/15.....

Steve....looks like a tiller off a 20 or 25hp will work. Handles have the same part number and the inards are the same. Give ya' somethin' to go on anywho.... :D

Hi
I've managed to find a tiller handle off of 20 hp Evinrude. The cable looks like new, but I can't work out how to route it around the powerhead. None of my manuals show how this is done.

Does anyone have a photo or drawing of how this cable goes? I'd appreciate any help here.

Thanks.
Steve

Steve...the cable goes through that rubber plub on the port side of the engine pan. There is also a keeper that will be needed to hold the cable in place inside the pan. I'll see if I can come up with a pic for ya'.

Re: Converting 9.9 Johnson back to tiller control.

Thanks a lot. A picture would be geat.

The keeper is attached to the cable that I have. I can see how it has to be fixed, ie, a small hole drilled in the pan and the keeper screwed onto it. Then there's the plastic bit with the hole that fits onto the, don't know what it's called but it moves the timing plate! My problem is that the cable doesn't seem to be able to reach all the way around the powerhead so that it ends up facing the right way.

Like Rodbolt says, it's probably the wrong cable. A new cable over here is £58, (about $100), plus tax, and even if I bought a new cable, I can't see how the twist grip comes apart to fit it!

I know I could use this cable somehow, even if it was routed on the outside of the pan and through a small hole near the rear, but I'd rather have it looking right if I can.

Thanks for your help, and I'll look forward to reading your comments tomorrow.
Steve

Steve...don't drill or do nothing till I get you a pic. I'm fairly sure the cables are the same.

Jim
