I've got a 1991 30HP Johnson electric start that has begun to have troubles starting. Seems like the electric primer isn't working properly. The primer has a Schrader valve; like a tire inflation valve, on it. What's the purpose of that valve? Is it for maintenance? Blowing out the lines? What air pressure?

Is the standard position for the red lever on the primer in line with the solenoid? What happens when the lever is at 90 degrees to the solenoid? Would changing the lever's direction increase or decrease the fuel delivered when the primer is activated?

It's been a great engine up till now aside from this annoying minor problem.
pismodune@yahoo.com

Re: Johnson 30Hp electric primer (1991)

Welcome to iboats Pismo....!

The Schrader Vlv. is for maint. with Engine Tuner and Fogger. Your local John/Rude dealer has the cans with the connections.

The red lever is the manual primer lever. Roll it 90 degrees or so and when you start cranking the engine, the gas will feed into the reed cage area. You use this lever in case the solenoid goes south. Normal position for the lever is along the solenoid body.

Re: Johnson 30Hp electric primer (1991)

OBJ,

Thanks for the quick response. My OMC manual has a great schematic for assembly of the primer and all the electrical specs but doesn't mention the Schrader valve, nor positioning the red lever. I had no idea that the lever worked as a manual primer (my service manual failed to mention that important fact). Does it make any difference whether I roll the lever to port or starboard?

I'll test it today by pulling the primer hose from the carb, per the manual.

Thanks again,
MH

It will only roll one way...counterclockwise. Roll it till it stops....don't force it any further.

Let us know what you find out.
